Wang Lung is part of this society where people sacrifice everything, including family members, in order to get rich. He works his land day in day out just to grow enough crops to feed himself, his family, and his servants. As he grows older, he realizes that there is more to life than just working on the land. He slowly buys more land until he becomes a wealthy man. However, sickness strikes him and leaves him crippled. His daughter-in-law takes advantage of his illness and forces him to give her all of his wealth. Wang Lung's sons kill her when she is pregnant with another man's child. In the end, Wang Lung dies alone with all his wealth taken away from him.The Good Earth has been called one of the best novels written by Pearl S. Buck. She explores how greed can overcome people and how important family is. She also writes about how hard life really was in China in the past century through Wang Lung's journey. Through his struggles to survive, readers learn about what life was like before communism took over China. The impact of this novel is so strong that it won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938.This book has been compared to The Grapes of Wrath because it explores how capitalism took over America after World War I until after World War II. There were many similarities between the characters in both novels since they were both written by American authors who lived abroad as expatriates during those times. The Good Earth also had a very similar theme to James Joyce's Ulysses. it explored how Western values were affecting Eastern societies at the time it was published in 1927.Author Biography:Pearl S. Buck was born in 1892 in West Hills, New York to Presbyterian missionaries who lived in China at the time. Her father worked as a missionary doctor while her mother worked as a missionary teacher at a girls' school in China. She studied English literature at Randolph Macon Woman's College and graduated at nineteen years old with honors in 1911. She married John Lossing Buck, an agricultural economist, in 1914 and moved back to Nanjing, China with him after their wedding even though she knew nothing about farming or economics at the time. She would later move to Peking (now Beijing. in 1921 with her husband due to conflicts with the Chinese government over her writings that were considered anti-communist at the time (her writings were based on her observations as an outsider. She would live there until 1952 when she moved back to America due to health reasons caused by overwork and stress which resulted in heart attacks for both her and her husband during those times (they were separated due to World War II but reunited after he returned home. She died of breast cancer twelve years later at 73 years old on March 6, 1973 in Danby, Vermont where she had retired after living another twenty years away from China after her husband passed away in 1952 due to heart failure (she did not remarry after his death.Buck wrote many novels but is most well known for writing The Good Earth which won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938 as well as her other famous novel The Mother .
