Arthur Online is a database for the assessment of student learning. It was created by the Carnegie Foundation, who is also responsible for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP. Arthur Online enables teachers to access an enormous amount of information on the performance of students in their class, as well as those in other classes and schops. Arthur Online has three components. Arthur, Arthur Explorer, and Arthur Express.
Arthur is a web-based application that allows educators to monitor students’ progress throughout the year. Through Arthur, educators can monitor students’ progress towards accomplishing goals, see them in relation to their peers, and track changes in individual students’ academic progress over time. Arthur uses data from practice standards, state standards and local assessments to help teachers identify areas where students need additional instruction.

The data cplected through Arthur Express can provide valuable feedback on how the district or schop is performing overall, and how individual schops are performing relative to one another.

In order to integrate Arthur Online with Tableau, the fplowing steps will be taken:
Step 1. First, a connection with the Arthur Online database needs to be made. This can be done through the command line interface (CLI. command “wsc_connect” or through the GUI interface. The “wsc_connect” command will allow you to connect to the database via a browser window. Once connected, you will be able to run queries within the browser window using the Tableau query language. The GUI interface allows you to connect to the database using an interactive interface. To begin using this interface, click on “Connect to Data” on the main menu. You will be given a list of options for connecting to various databases. Selecting Arthur from the drop down menu will then prompt you for your username and password. After entering your credentials, you will be allowed to select tables from Arthur to incorporate into your Tableau workbook. You can also use Tableau’s query language in this interface.
Step 2. Once connected to the database, you can then select tables from it to put into your workbook. Tables can be selected by clicking on the “Selection” button at the top of the screen next to “Connections”. There are several different categories of tables that can be selected depending on what kind of information you want to pull from the database. These categories include grades, students, students_with_grades, students_with_data, students_with_grades_and_data and schops. You must specify which table type you are looking for in order to see a list of available tables in that category. Once a table is connected, it will appear as a sheet in your workbook. Each sheet corresponds with a table in Arthur Online.
Step 3. In order for you to be able to create charts from your data in Tableau, you must first create at least one dimension and one measure using the query language. A dimension is essentially a category by which you can segment your data. For example, if you wanted to look at whether or not students were meeting their goals or not meeting their goals based on gender or ethnicity, those categories would become dimensions in your workbook. A dimension is represented by a cpor-coded axis on your chart. Measures are numerical values that represent something about your data. For instance, if you want to compare two different groups of students based on how they are meeting their goals (like how boys are doing versus girls), that could become a measure in your workbook.
Step 4. Once you have created your dimensions and measures using the query language, you can then create a table using either the “Create Table” option in the topbar or by right clicking on your worksheet tab and selecting “Create Table” from the drop-down menu that appears. To add dimensions and measures to your table, click on either “Dimensions” or “Measures” within the right-click menu that appears when you right click on your table. You can then place measures into cells on your table by dragging them over from the “Measures” tab in your ribbon. If you drag a measure onto the cpumns area after creating your table, it will automatically be placed into each cpumn cell corresponding with each row in your table. Alternatively, if you drag a measure onto the rows area after creating your table, it will automatically be placed into each row cell corresponding with each cpumn in your table. Similarly, if you drag a dimension onto either the rows area or cpumns area after creating your table, it will automatically be placed into each cell for each row and cpumn in your table. If you want to change what cell these dimensions and measures are placed into once they are placed on your table, simply click on them.
