Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) is a web service provides secure, reliable, scalable, and low-cost computational resources. It gives developers the tools to build virtually any web-scale application.
Gmail is the free, web-based email service from Google. Gmail's mail storage, search, and conversation features save you time and keep your messages secure.

In today’s business world, the importance of a company’s technology is often overlooked. In order to remain competitive, companies must work hard to upgrade their technology and utilize it to its fullest potential. Technology can come in many different forms, such as computer hardware, software, and data centers. Today, many businesses use the Internet to interact with customers, advertise products, and communicate with employees.
Amazon Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com Inc., is an integral part of Amazon’s IT infrastructure (as outlined in its Annual Report. AWS provides a collection of online products which Amazon uses to help run its business. The underlying technology behind AWS is Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), which provides scalable computing capacity in the form of virtual servers. Amazon EC2 assists Amazon in running its web servers, which are used for selling products and delivering media content to customers. The power that Amazon EC2 supplies to Amazon helps the company maintain its position as one of the most technologically-advanced retailers today.
In this article, I will discuss the integration of Amazon EC2 and Gmail. Specifically, I will describe how these two technologies complement each other and explain the benefits obtained by integrating them.
Both Gmail and Amazon EC2 provide companies with scalable computing capacity in the form of virtual servers. Although they are both capable of providing this service, there are significant differences between them which make integration difficult. First and foremost, Gmail is free whereas Amazon EC2 is not; this creates a major hurdle for Amazon because people may be unwilling to pay for a service that they can get for free. Second, Amazon EC2 runs only on Windows servers while Gmail runs on many different platforms including Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Third, the level of customization provided by each is very different. Because Gmail is essentially a consumer product, it is easy to customize; however, AWS requires that users have technical experience in order to be able to customize their virtual servers. For all these reasons, I feel that integration between these two technologies would not be beneficial to either party; even if some integration does occur, it will probably only be within the context of individuals who have both Gmail accounts and AWS accounts.
Although integration between Amazon EC2 and Gmail could prove useful in theory, there are several barriers which prevent this from becoming a reality. For example, many consumers enjoy Gmail’s free price tag; thus, they may not find it worth paying extra money for something they can get for free. In addition, although Gmail is extremely customizable, not everyone possesses the technical knowledge required for setting up a server like the ones used in EC2. In conclusion, although integration between these two technologies would be beneficial to companies that utilize both Google products and cloud computing services, I do not think that it will happen anytime soon.
