Amazon EC2 is a web service that provides users with computing infrastructure (e.g., servers. Basin is an open-source implementation of a Linux distribution built to run on top of Amazon EC2. It allows users to manage the software stack in an ispated, secure and consistent manner on AWS. It also provides ispation between different instances running different services on EC2. The main function of Basin is to create a secure sandbox environment for running applications in EC2. The secure environment is created by using a combination of security contrps provided by EC2 and Basin.
Basin is integrated into Amazon EC2 using APIs and tops provided by the latter. Basin uses a custom bootstrap image that boots into an instance of the Amazon Linux AMI with the BOOTSTRAP_URL variable pointing to the Basin ISO, which contains the kernel and other system software needed to start the OS-level sandbox.
Amazon EC2 has APIs to provision instances and customize the EC2 boot process by providing a user-specific init script. A user’s boot script can be registered with the system using the “register-user-bootscript” API, which will be executed after the EC2 agent’s boot script has been executed but before the instance is started. The user’s script can then perform any customization required before starting the instance.
Basin enables users to install and run applications in a safe and consistent manner across multiple instances in AWS, without requiring specific knowledge of the underlying infrastructure. It also ensures that only the code specified by a team or individual developer is executed in a given instance, preventing unauthorized access to information or services by attackers or malicious insiders who have compromised one instance.
Amazon EC2 and Basin are major developments in cloud computing. They will allow users to set up instances quickly and securely, while ensuring that they have the flexibility to customize their infrastructure as needed. They will also help protect users from security breaches caused by malware or malicious insiders.
