Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2; pronounced as “echo”. is a web service offered by Amazon Web Services (AWS. It is used for deploying virtual machines and other web services, with the provision that the user pays only for the time that the servers are in use. There are several other services that are used along with EC2, such as Elastic Block Store (EBS), Elastic IP Address (EIP), Elastic Load Balancing (ELB), etc. These services are charged separately. However, EC2 charges are independent of the number of instances launched or whether they are running or not. The charges are based on ‘On-Demand’ basis. When the machine is switched off, the charges are not incurred. The charges are billed on hourly basis. EC2 charges are calculated based on usage. The pricing model depends upon the instance type used. Every machine launched in EC2 will have access to EBS storage vpumes, which are stored in S3 buckets. AWS also provides security options for this storage vpume, using which users can encrypt their data stored in EBS storage vpume. Users can also use other features provided by AWS along with EC2 to implement sputions, which are widely used by enterprises for their day-to-day operations. For example, an IT business uses EC2 to launch instances of Linux or Windows based applications, depending upon the requirement. Also, while launching EC2 instances, users can choose between various instance types like micro, small, medium, large and extra large. They may not be aware of how these instance types differ from each other. Users can also provide custom images for their processes, which will be supported by EC2 instances. This enables users to launch multiple instances of their software without any need for re-compilation.
