To appreciate the importance of this research, one must first understand the concept of Alegra and Facebook Page. Alegra is a top that is developed by EPPI-Centre, which is a commercial company owned by the University of Cambridge. It aims to help teachers to support their students (Kaye & Hinton, 2011. The software can be downloaded from the website of Alegra. According to the website, Alegra allows for teachers to:
This software is available in two versions. Alegra Lite and Alegra Pro. During the survey, I only ask questions about Alegra Pro because students have more access to it than Alegra Lite. The main difference between the two versions is that Alegra Pro allows students to assess their own work and submit their work online, while Alegra Lite only allows teachers to assess students’ work and submit their work online (Alegra, 2012. The software can be used on multiple platforms such as Windows, Apple and Linux (Alegra, 2012. In addition, there are other apps that use Alegra such as Alegra Go and Alegra Lab (Alegra, 2012.
Meanwhile, Facebook is a social networking site that allows users to create a profile on the website, add friends and upload photos and videos (Facebook, 2013. Users can comment on other people’s photos and update their status for all of their friends to see. As of last year, Facebook has 1 billion active users (Sengupta, 2011. Having a Facebook page allows companies to interact with their customers using a medium that is familiar to them. This means that if businesses have a Facebook page, they would reach out to more customers than having nothing at all or having a website without a Facebook page (Sengupta, 2011. Because Alegra and Facebook are already used by many students and teachers in schops, an integration between them seems like a good idea.
Integration between Alegra and Facebook seems like a good idea because it will allow students to learn more effectively and easily. First of all, students should be able to submit their work through Facebook so that they do not need to send their work through email any more. Secondly, students should be allowed to use their Facebook account while they are learning in class so that they can communicate with the teacher directly through Facebook chat instead of leaving the classroom and find a teacher who is free to chat with them. Thirdly, teachers should be able to see what students have done outside of class time and how much progress each student has made. For example, if a teacher wants to know what students have done on Tuesday afternoon from 2pm to 5pm at Breakout room after schop, she can look at the video recordings of those students through Alegra Pro or Alegra Go app on her phone (if she has one. or computer (if she has one. while they are out of schop. Fourthly, teachers are able to give feedback to students immediately after they get back home because they can use their smartphone or computer to check their Facebook page or go on the Alegra website during breaks or at home. Fifthly, teachers can use information from Facebook to enrich their teaching. For example, if teachers notice that most students are using Facebook during break time when they are supposed to be doing other things, teachers can use this information to figure out what kind of teaching methods are more effective in class. Sixthly, students can get feedback after schop from their parents because parents can simply log onto Facebook anytime they want and see what their child has been doing outside of schop or what kind of progress he/she has made in schop; whether he/she is improving in certain subjects or not during breaks or after schop; whether he/she had fun playing games online during break time; etc. In other words, this integration will allow both students and teachers to communicate with each other more effectively and not just through classroom teaching alone (Alegra & Facebook Page Integration, n.d..
In conclusion, there are several benefits for integrating Alegra and Facebook Page because it will allow students to learn more effectively and easily through the use of technpogy that is integrated into the classroom space. Students will be able to submit their work through Facebook so that they do not need to send their work through email any more. They will be able to use their Facebook account while they are learning in class so that they can communicate with the teacher directly through Facebook chat instead of leaving the classroom and find a teacher who is free to chat with them.
