Chapter 6-How to Make Your Writing Creative
Writing is not just about putting down words one after another; it is about getting your ideas across in a creative way that will make your readers listen to you. In writing, there are three elements that contribute to the overall quality of your piece. They are:
The first two elements will determine whether your writing will be read or not. The third element will make your piece stand out from the others.
6.2 Is Content King?
First of all, we have to understand the difference between content and style. Content refers to the actual meaning of your writing; it is the facts, arguments, and supporting information you have in your mind when you write your article. Style refers to the way you present your content; it is how you arrange, organize, and put down your ideas on paper so that they come across to your audience in a clear and interesting manner. For example, let's take a look at these two sentences:
The sample sentence 1 is longer than sentence 2, but it still gets its message across in a simple manner. The structure of these two sentences is different, but they have similar content because they both communicate the same thing.
The sample sentence 1 is shorter than sentence 2, but it still gets its message across in a clear way. The structure of these two sentences is also different, but they have similar content because they both communicate the same thing.
The sample sentence 1 is longer than sentence 2, and it makes use of elaborate words such as “antediluvian” and “peradventure” to entertain and confuse your audience. The structure of these two sentences is similar, but they have different content because they both communicate different things.
The sample sentence 1 is shorter than sentence 2, and it makes use of simple words such as “at” and “the” to make sure that the message gets across clearly. The structure of these two sentences is different, but they have similar content because they both communicate the same thing.
As we can see from the above examples, there are many ways a writer can present his message effectively so that his audience will listen to him. However, some writers may think that the key to writing successfully depends on how well you put down your ideas on paper-this means that good writing only comes from good content. Therefore, writers who have good content will always succeed regardless of their writing skills because their content alone will make them successful. Based on this assumption, they do not put much effort into improving their style because they believe that it does not matter anyway because their content can carry them through. This kind of thinking is wrong because writing is never just about presenting your ideas clearly; it is about presenting your ideas in a manner that will attract your audience and keep them listening to you until the last word on your paper. Let me give you an example to illustrate my point better:
We all know that English is not our mother tongue; therefore, when we speak English or write in English, our English has limited ability to express our thoughts completely in a given amount of time. If you are a native speaker of English who has been learning English since you were young, then you still cannot say everything you want to say in English even after spending many years with English; this means that you will spend most of your time thinking about what comes next while speaking or writing English. This problem becomes even more severe when you have more complicated ideas in mind because you may need more time to think about what comes next before putting your ideas on paper (or speaking.
Imagine that you are attending one of those TED talks (http://www.ted.com/talks. where speakers talk about controversial issues such as ppitics and religion; if someone makes a statement during one of these talks that you agree with or find interesting, then you would probably want to listen to what he has to say next because you wish to find out more about his argument or share your own thoughts on his statement. As a result, even though you may not be interested in the topic at first, you will still want to listen because the speaker has managed to draw your attention somehow and keep you interested in his talk until the end. If the speaker fails to do so, then you might just fall asleep or change channels during his speech because his arguments do not appeal to you enough until they convince you otherwise. This means that he has failed as a speaker despite having good content; he has failed because his lack of skill as a writer did not allow him to capture the attention of his audience quickly enough once he started talking about his controversial topic. When he speaks the way he does, he may be stating facts or giving details about his topic, but he does not engage his audience in such an interesting manner so that his listeners are willing to listen to him until the very end of his speech or presentation. Instead of stopping at a point where everyone is still listening attentively and asking questions about his arguments (an ending point), he keeps going until he finally loses their interest (a non-ending point.
Now let's take another look at the two sample sentences above:
Both samples show us that content alone cannot carry us through if we do not know how to present our ideas effectively in order to get our message across successfully; if we fail at presenting our ideas effectively, then our writing will be boring or confusing for our readers unless we are extremely lucky (if we are lucky enough to get featured on one of those TED talks. In other words, even if we have good content in mind, we may still fail as writers if we do not know how present our ideas creatively so that our readers pay attention to us and continue listening until the very end of our writings. For example:
Even though both samples tell us the same thing (i.e., “You should eat healthy food”), sample A seems more convincing than sample B because it presents its idea in a creative manner whereas sample B presents its idea in a boring manner. Sample A makes use of simple words and sentences that are easy for anyone to fplow; plus it offers concrete evidence as support for its claim (i.e., “we all know...”. Sample B uses compound sentences and complex words that might confuse some readers; furthermore, it offers no concrete evidence for its claim (i.e., “some scientists say…”. Although both samples contain good content and organized information, only sample A appeals to its audience so well that it leads them into believing that eating healthy food is important; sample B has failed as a persuasive piece despite having good content because it lacks style (it has no creativity. Therefore, choosing whether or not to put effort into improving your style depends on whether or not you want people to listen to you. If you want people to listen to what you have to say and continue listening until the very end without losing interest somewhere along the way, then you have no choice but to improve your style by adding creativity into your writing. Even though content is king, style matters as much as content does because style determines whether or not our readers stay with us until the end of our writings while enjoying what we have said so far or leaving us behind after being bored with our writings in the middle of our articles or speeches.
6.3 Is Organization King?
When I ask my students what makes them lose interest in a piece of writing when doing schopwork or studying for an exam, most of them say that they lose interest when the writer has poor organization skills because he does not know how to present his ideas clearly and logically so that they can easily fplow him along from start to finish without getting lost somewhere along the way and struggling with his ideas along the way due to poor organization skills. In other words, organization skills are important when writing an article because they help us organize our thoughts effectively so that our readers can fplow us easily
