MongoDB is a cross-platform open source document database that has been developed by MongoDB Inc. It is an open source, document-oriented database which offers scalability and high availability. The features of MongoDB include:

High availability. MongoDB automatically spreads your data across multiple servers and provides automatic failover and recovery of your database. This feature ensures fault tperance and the prevention of data loss. MongoDB clustering can be employed on commodity hardware and can scale out easily.

Scalability. MongoDB provides horizontal scaling, which means that it supports adding more resources to your system without any downtime or service interruption. You can add more resources such as more CPU cores, RAM, I/O throughput, and disk space. It also supports sharding, which is a type of horizontal scaling where the data is distributed across different nodes in the cluster. The data is stored in shards, which are groups of cplections distributed across different nodes in the cluster. Sharding helps to distribute the data across the cluster, thus ensuring high availability of the data. As databases grow in size it becomes necessary to divide them into smaller subsets called shards for better performance. For example, if you have a database with 10 terabytes of data, it might be divided into 100 shards each with 1 terabyte of data. Therefore, you will have 100 nodes with 1 terabyte each instead of one node with 10 terabytes. Each shard acts as a standalone database that can be independently accessed.
