How to DM on Instagram to Engage Leads
Instagram is a place where people share stories, express themselves and build relationships with their followers. The platform has over 800 million users who spend an average of 21 minutes on the app every day.
If you’re not using Instagram to grow your business, that’s like leaving money on the table. If you are, here are some ways to get more people commenting and replying to your photos.
1) Post images that look great without filters. Learn how to make beautiful images in Photoshop or similar editing tools like GIMP or Pixelmator . It can take a little while to master all the techniques but it’s worth it when you improve the quality of your content. Let’s say you started posting “filtered” photos and they weren’t getting much engagement. You’d realize something was wrong, hopefully change up your strategy and keep trying different things until you find what works for you.
2) Ask questions in captions. If you want interaction, ask questions in your caption instead of just making statements. Questions get responses!
3) Use hashtags strategically. There are tons of Instagram Hashtag out there but only a few really matter so try to limit yourself to 5-10 hashtags per post. The most popular ones include #love, #instagood, #photooftheday, #picoftheday , etc… But avoid using tags like “#followback” because they don’t add value to the conversation and they make it seem like you’re desperate for more followers (which always comes off as Inauthentic ). In addition, try tagging brands rather than tagging popular hashtags when you work with influencers for example because this will help them reach their relevant audience in a relevant way (which is more likely going to lead to conversions).
4) Ask for feedback and suggestions. This works especially well on Instagram and people love to give their opinion.
5) Use the “Follow” button in your bio. This is a great way to convert new followers into leads because they don’t even have to follow you on Instagram to get your content. All they need to do is click the “Follow” button then complete your form for more info or join your email list, which you can then use to nurture that lead into a customer.
6) Be consistent with posting frequency. If you’re not posting regularly, it’s going to be harder for you to build an engaged audience because people are more likely to unfollow accounts that aren’t posting regularly enough. Once you start posting consistently, people will follow you back because they want fresh content from you. The best way I’ve found is to post 2-3 times per day when I’m launching a new product or trying to drive traffic to my blog posts. Although posting too much can annoy users so there’s no set amount – just test it out and see what works for you!
7) Engage with other users in the comments section. I always try to pay it forward by commenting on other people’s photos when they call me out in the caption but if you want them to engage with your photo, comment on their photos as well! You can also reply to their comments in the thread so it doesn’t look like you’re being fake about being genuine. Don’t forget to tag them when doing so! The more genuine interactions you have, the higher chance of them interacting with your photo (and potentially converting into one of your customers).
8) Engage with other users on Instagram stories. Stories are a great way to engage your audience and engage with potential customers because they disappear after 24 hours so you can interact with them in real time. I always try to engage with fans and potential customers on my Instagram story but it’s also a good idea to send out private messages to people who comment on your story, especially if they ask a question or share something valuable with you. They could potentially convert into one of your customers as well!
10) Pay for Instagram Ads. This is a great way to quickly grow your audience on Instagram but I always recommend using this method as an experiment to see how it works for you before committing to it full time. I’ve had some success with Facebook ads so I tried them out on Instagram and they worked really well bringing me around $500/day of targeted traffic in less than 24 hours!
11) Use the “Book Now” button in your bio. If you’re running an online business, you can use the “Book Now” button in your bio to convert Instagram followers into customers. You just need to set it up correctly by creating a simple landing page that explains what you do (for example, if you’re working with influencers, make sure you include some examples of the work you’ve done with other businesses), some information about how much it costs (make sure to include some pricing options or an explanation of how much time it will take which will help potential customers decide if it’s worth it for them) and some form of payment (if you’re doing something like consulting, setting up a consultation is the best way). 12) Run Instagram giveaways. This is another great way to drive traffic and conversions because you get people excited about your product or service and give them something free in exchange for their email address which helps you build a list and nurture leads into customers later. The key is coming up with a cool giveaway that people want (don’t offer something lame like a free T-shirt because no one likes free T-shirts) and then promoting it on all your social media channels (including Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest). One advantage that Instagram has over other platforms is that users are more likely to engage with your content so even if only 10% of the people who enter follow through with signing up for your newsletter, chances are they’ll be more engaged than someone who signs up from Facebook because there was less effort required on their part. You can also post their names in the caption if they include one so when they see it pop up again in their inbox, they’ll feel special and more likely to open it!
13) Write blog posts that target people interested in what you’re sharing on Instagram. If you’re launching a new product or trying to promote one , try writing blog posts that target people who are interested in what you sell on Instagram instead of creating a new piece of content every time. For example, if I were promoting our Social Media Management platform , I would create a series of blog posts where I explain why we created the tool, what kind of results we get from using it, what makes us different from similar tools out there etc… You can then share those posts directly on Instagram via links which lead back to your website or blog posts – this gives people more context about your product while also allowing them to read more about it since many users don’t have enough space in their feeds! This worked really well when we wanted to promote our new influencer marketing software called LaunchPad so we wrote a series of blog posts explaining different ways we use LaunchPad internally at Buffer including case studies about individual influencers . We also made sure each post had a catchy headline so people would be more likely to click through. Then we shared these posts directly from our website right into our Instagram Stories feed where they could get extra impressions from being promoted right next to our stories! In addition, we shared these same posts from our Buffer account because at the time there were only around 29K active users so we thought there was still room for growth 🙂 We ended up getting over 150 signups within 2 days!
