History of Hanukkah - Stories, Traditions & Origins of the Jewish Holiday of Lights
Hanukkah is a very special holiday for the people of Israel. It is the only holiday that has been preserved since ancient times. The eight-day holiday commemorates the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrian Greek general, Antiochus, in 165 BCE. The victory was made possible by a small vial of oil that miraculously lasted 8 days when it should have burned for only one day. This miracle was commemorated by lighting a lamp in each window of the homes of Israel. Hanukkah has been celebrated for more than two thousand years.
Hanukkah is also called Chanukah or Channukah (Hebrew: חנוכה), meaning "dedication" and also Candles, Feast of Lights, and Festival of Lights. The word "Hanukkah" is found in the book of I Maccabees which describes the re-dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem and its defilement by Syria. It was written by someone who lived at the time of the events he describes, probably a priest from Jerusalem.
The Jewish Encyclopedia gives this account: "The Hasmoneans were forced to celebrate their festival secretly in the night ... they lit lamps and kindled lights in every part of their habitations." The festival thus became known as "Chanukah," or "Dedication."
The holiday was outlawed by Antiochus but rededicated by Judah Maccabee's forces after they defeated him. Thus, Hanukkah commemorates both a historical event and a revolution that led to an era of independence for the Jewish people after centuries of oppression and persecution.
The festival was marked by kindling lights in every home, a celebration with friends and family, and giving presents to children. It is also customary for families to eat latkes (potato pancakes) and jelly doughnuts (sufganiyot). It is customary for children to play with dreidels (spinning tops), using treats collected during Hanukkah as prizes.
Hanukkah is the only holiday that has been preserved since ancient times because it was kept alive throughout all generations. The story of Hanukkah shows how important it is to preserve traditions, because even though it may be hard to keep a tradition going for many years if we want something enough we can make it last forever!
