Gumroad was taking 10% of every sale. Once I crossed $40K annual revenue I was paying $4,000 a year for what’s basically a Stripe wrapper. Appy Pie collapsed that into one branded site with no marketplace cut.
Naomi spent five years building an indie author career on Gumroad. By early 2026 she had 22 published titles, 4 series, $42K annual revenue and a margin problem: Gumroad’s 10% per-sale fee was eating $4,200/year off the top, on top of Stripe’s standard 2.9% + 30¢ processing.
She switched to Appy Pie’s eBook website builder over a long Saturday afternoon. The migration tool imported all 22 titles with metadata (covers, blurbs, ISBN where present), past customer email list, and active subscription members. Stripe Connect re-linked automatically and every active subscriber got a one-tap “your library is now at memoirs-tester.com” email.
Naomi pocketed $4,200/year in saved fees, kept the same domain (which had been parked through Gumroad), and added two Gumroad-blocked features: a subscription library at $12/mo and a Substack-style paid newsletter. Annual revenue climbed 28% in the 90 days post-migration because subscribers stuck around longer than one-time buyers, and Book schema on each title page started ranking her book names on Google within 7 days of relaunch.
