I: Introduction

Seo is the process of getting traffic to websites from search engines. Search engine optimization is also called SEO or organic search engine optimization. It is an important part of internet marketing strategy. The main purpose of SEO is to get good rankings for your website on major search engines like google, yahoo and bing by improving its visibility based on search engine’s algorithms.

It involves analyzing your site, identifying its strengths and weaknesses, creating a plan of action to improve its visibility, implementing the plan, monitoring the results, making adjustments where necessary to ensure that the other, specific parts of your business are working well together.

Google has made it relatively easy to rank in the top 5 for most keyword searches. However, there are many other tactics you can use to take your web site to the next level. If you are looking for the short version of the article, here it is:

To rank for keywords that have low competition you need to have links from authority sites. To rank for keywords that have high competition, you need to have links from authority sites AND have content on your site that answers searchers questions better than anyone else.

The following is a detailed explanation of both of these techniques.

Google has done a great job at making it easy to rank in the top 5 for any keyword that doesn’t have much competition. So if your niche is not competitive you should be able to rank in the top 5 with very little effort. For example, I ranked #1 for the search term “social media marketing strategy” with only one page optimized for this exact phrase. Within 24 hours of publishing this page I started ranking in the top 5 every time Google ran its indexing process (which it does over 1000 times per day). It took very little effort to achieve the #1 ranking because there wasn’t much competition. You can use Google Adwords Keyword Planner to find out exactly how much competition there is for any keyword. Just type in a keyword and look at the suggested bid. The lower the suggested bid the less competition there is. Here is what it looks like for the keyword “social media marketing strategy”:

As you can see, even though there are about 1,300 searches per month, there isn’t much competition because advertisers are not willing to pay much for this phrase. If your niche is not competitive you should be able to get a high page rank without much effort. Google has made it so easy for you to rank in the top 5 if you know what you are doing so take advantage of it! In my opinion you should focus all of your time and energy on ranking for terms with low competition because that will give you a more stable and predictable income stream. However, if you really want to have a big impact on your business then you should learn how to rank for keywords with high competition as well. This will require a more advanced approach which I cover below.

If you want to rank in the top 5 for high competition keywords then you need to have links from authority sites pointing at your website. Authority sites are websites that have been around for a long time and have lots of traffic coming from search engines. In order to get links from authority sites you need to understand what they want on their websites and how they want it presented. Here are some things that authority sites look for when they add content:

Relevant content that answers the searchers question well. Content that conveys a tone of expertise and authority Content that is well organized and easy to read Content that looks good on mobile devices Content that has a strong call-to-action at the bottom

Here is an example of a landing page from one of my sites:

As you can see, this landing page has very relevant content that answers the searcher’s question about “what is social media marketing?” and it is presented in a way that gives the reader the impression that I know my stuff and this article will help them solve their problem. This article also has a strong call-to-action at the bottom that encourages the visitor to sign up for my email list which will give me access to their email and allow me to market my services and products directly to them via email. I know this sounds like a sales pitch but if I can help one person become successful with social media marketing every time I send an email then this tactic is worth it. It may sound like I am bragging about myself but I didn’t think it was possible to make money with SEO until I read some books by Neil Patel and Brian Dean and actually started applying their strategies online. Now I don’t think there is any better way to make money online than SEO and digital marketing in general because you can scale up with no limit and only need basic computer and internet skills (which is why I blog about it so much). My landing page also has clean design that looks good on mobile phones which makes sense because I get about 65% of my traffic from mobile devices now. Google prefers pages with mobile friendly designs because their users love easy to use mobile devices so you should optimize your landing pages accordingly. Here is what it looks like on my phone:

So now that you know what authority sites want on their websites, here are some tips on how to get links from them:

Focus on creating content that answers common questions in your niche. Find out what people are struggling with in your niche and create content that answers their questions in a simple, straightforward manner that gives them the impression that you are an expert who knows what they are talking about. You should then promote this content on social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, Google+ etc., post it on other websites related to your niche, include it in articles related to your niche on other websites, share it with friends through email, text messaging etc., publish it on blogs related to your niche etc., etc., etc… You can promote your content by creating custom links using bitly or using social media tools like AddThis or BufferApp etc., etc., etc….. Every link you receive will increase your authority with google and help you rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs). Blogging can be very effective especially if you create lists of helpful tips related to your niche every week or month or however frequently you decide to write new content. Make sure you include plenty of images in your posts along with videos too which will help drive up your page views and impressions which can result in more link requests from other authors who read your posts. If you want extra credibility try getting guest posts published on authority sites related to your niche or reach out to popular bloggers in your niche via Twitter or Facebook messenger or email etc., etc., etc…. Contacting people directly via Skype video chat might be an even better idea since these conversations usually end up lasting longer than emails or social media messages (and often turn into friendships) but contacting people directly takes time so be patient when reaching out via these channels. As long as you stay authentic and honest in your communications everyone will appreciate you reaching out to them even if they don’t want to link back to your site (or even if they don’t want to talk at all). Don’t be afraid to ask people who mention something related to your niche if they would be interested in writing or linking back to one of your posts or articles or offering any other kind of support (like sharing one of your posts on Facebook) because most people are happy when they can help someone else succeed who shares their interests (and if they aren’t then just forget about them). If this sounds like too much work then just keep reading because I am going to tell you about easier ways to get links below…
