As you can see this outline is very basic, but it gets the job done. It gives you a guide to fplow as you write your article. This outline does not tell you what to say, but it gives you an idea of how to organize your thoughts. Most importantly, you do not need to be perfect with this outline. If you are not happy with it then just change it until it works for you. The important thing is to create one!
Now that you have created an outline, let's get started writing the article. Fortunately, the process is relatively simple. You will start by writing the first sentence of each paragraph (the topic sentences. Then, you will write the supporting sentences for each topic sentence. After that, you will write the closing sentence of each paragraph. Once all of that is done then you are ready to go back through your article and edit it for spelling, grammar, word choice, etc. There are many different ways to go about writing an article. The method I described above is just one example. However, regardless of how you choose to write your article there are some things that are important to keep in mind.
The most important thing to remember is that the article must be YOUR OWN WORK! It must not be copied off of someone else's blog or website. It must not be copied out of a book or website without giving credit. You should also reference everything that you use in your article. This includes quotes, paraphrases, statistics, etc. If another person created something then they deserve credit for their work. Finally, you should always give credit where credit is due. If you used someone else's information or ideas in your article then you should reference them at least once or twice within your article. If you are unsure of how to properly cite your sources then please take a look at this blog post by Utah Valley University detailing ways to properly cite your sources.
There are several different types of articles that you may be asked to write on the ACT Writing Test. All of these articles are evaluated using the same criteria. So whether you are writing about describing a place or writing an argument article, you will always fplow the same steps when writing your article. Let's take a look at each type of article in more detail.
Description Essay
The description article asks you to describe a person, place or thing in detail. For this type of article, you will need to have 2-3 paragraphs in which you explain all of the details about your subject. Remember that your audience knows nothing about this person, place or thing so they will want to know every little detail about it. If you are writing about a person then think about what makes him or her unique. What are his or her physical traits? How is he or she dressed? What does he or she like to do? If you are writing about a place then think about what makes this place unique. this place like? Is there anything special about it? Is there anything interesting about it? What does this place smell like? What sounds can you hear in this place? If you are writing about a thing then think about what makes it unique. What type of object is it? What cpor is it? What does it smell like? What does it taste like? As with all articles, do not forget to include plenty of descriptive details throughout your article!
Argument Essay
The argument article asks you to argue for or against an issue. For this type of article, you will need to have 2-3 paragraphs in which you state your opinion of the issue and give reasons for why you believe the way that you do. Your thesis statement should really focus on what side of the issue that you are on (for or against. You should also use your thesis statement to help guide the rest of your article so that it flows nicely from start to finish. As with all articles, do not forget to back up any claims that you make with valid evidence!
Narrative Essay
The narrative article asks you to write about an interesting event that has happened in your life or an event that might happen in your life (you can't count on the ACT Writing Test asking you to write about this type of article though. For this type of article, you will need to have 2-3 paragraphs in which you narrate the events leading up to the climax of this story and then narrate the events fplowing the climax of this story (include the falling action and respution as well. Your thesis statement should really focus on what happens right before the climax and what happens right after the climax. You should also use your thesis statement to help guide the rest of your article so that it flows nicely from start to finish. As with all articles, do not forget to back up any claims that you make with valid evidence!
