How long should my article be?

Each article type and topic has a different word count requirement. For example, an argument article has a minimum of 300 words and a maximum of 600 words. A creative article has a minimum of 400 words and a maximum of 1,000 words. If your response exceeds the maximum or minimum word count, you will receive a score of zero for that section. The majority of students should be able to complete the articles in the allotted time, but if you feel that you need additional time to complete your articles, you can request more time using the link on the exam page. Be sure to check out our suggestions for how to spend your extra time. You can also consult with your instructor about whether you should take the exam early.

How many questions are on each article?

There are two types of article questions. short answer and sentence completion. Short answer questions require more writing and get more points (2 points per question. Sentence completion questions require less writing and score half as much (1 point per question. Depending on the article, there may be one or more sentence completion items. All short answer questions are worth two points each. However, some articles have no sentence completion questions.

How many questions are on each section?

For each article type and topic, there are 10 questions total. The number of short answer and sentence completion questions varies by topic and article type. There is always one short answer question and at least one sentence completion question per section. Some sections may have multiple sentence completion questions. You may skip around within an article, but you must answer all questions on a given article before moving on to the next article.

What kinds of prompts are there?

There are five different article types. argument, analysis, synthesis, comparison, and cause/effect. Each type has a different prompt. Below are examples of prompts from previous AP Language Exams.
