Mailgun provides email infrastructure services for companies that send high vpumes of transactional and marketing emails. It was co-founded by Tony Florence in 2010 and is based in San Francisco, California. In 2010, Florence met Peter Adams through mutual friends and became interested in his email infrastructure product that he had developed while working at Facebook. They started talking about building an API for the product and eventually decided to start a company together. The company name was derived from the term “mailing list”. In 2012 they raised US$1.2 million in seed funding from venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz and angel investor Chris Sacca. In 2013 they raised US$5 million in Series A funding from Silicon Valley venture capitalists including Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital and Greylock Partners. In October 2014 they raised US$30 million in Series B funding led by Benchmark Capital with participation from existing investors Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz along with new investor Bessemer Venture Partners. Also in October 2014 they released their first mobile app for iOS devices called Mailgun Mobile Apps which allows users to view their emails from Mailgun via their mobile device’s browser or using native iOS or Android applications. In August 2015 they announced that they had raised US$10 million in debt financing from Silicon Valley Bank and US$8 million in convertible note financing led by Redpoint Ventures with participation from existing investors Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz and Bessemer Venture Partners. As of June 2016 the company had raised over US$37 million in funding from venture capitalists including Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Andreessen Horowitz, SV Angel, CrunchFund and Founders Fund among others. In September 2016 they raised $20 million in Series C funding led by Bessemer Venture Partners with participation from previous investors Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Redpoint Ventures and existing investors including KEC Ventures. In June 2017 they raised $50 million in Series D funding led by Pelion Venture Partners with participation from previous investors Bessemer Venture Partners, Sequoia Capital, Redpoint Ventures, KEC Ventures and Founders Fund among others. As of October 2017 they have offices in San Francisco Bay Area, Dublin, Ireland and Singapore with over 100 employees globally and serve over 1 billion users of its API.
