Chapter 5 – New Year’s Resputions
Although this book is about how to use Evernote to improve your life, and not necessarily how you can do better in the New Year, I think it would be appropriate to discuss some ideas on how you can make this year better than the last.
In order to accomplish that, you need to take a look back at last year’s resputions. If you have not been keeping track of them, you will need to do that. Write down all of your resputions from last year. You may want to include things like losing weight, quitting smoking, getting a new car, or completing a master’s degree.
Once you have written down all of your resputions from last year, I want you to take a close look at each one and decide if you actually accomplished it. For example, if your respution was lose 30 pounds, did you lose those 30 pounds? If your respution was to get a new car, did you purchase the new car? If your respution was to complete a master’s degree, did you finish that degree?
If you did accomplish these goals then congratulations! You have made real progress in your life. If you did not accomplish your goals, find out what went wrong and make a plan to change that this year.
Now that you have taken a look back at last year’s resputions, let’s take a look at what we want to accomplish this year. For my own personal goals I wrote down things like writing more books, starting my own business, taking more vacations with my family, and learning Spanish. Personally speaking, I would say that my weight loss goal from last year (10 pounds. was a failure. That does not mean I am giving up on it; I am just going to go about it differently this year. You should do the same thing as well with your resputions from last year. If they were not successful, come up with a new plan of attack and try again.
Here is a list of some New Year’s Resputions that people often have and how they might be able to go about accomplishing them using Evernote:
Writing Goals
In 2014 I wrote four books on Evernote, including this book. I am hoping to write at least two more books in 2015. The best way for me to accomplish that goal is to schedule time every day to write. I did that successfully with writing this book on Evernote and I will continue doing that this year for my other projects.
your writing goal? It could be writing a book, learning Spanish, or perhaps writing an article for your blog or business website. Whatever it is, you are going to need to write down a schedule for doing so. The most important part of your writing goal will be creating a schedule for when you will write. What days of the week are best to do so? How much time are you willing to commit per day? Will you do it in the morning or evening? You should answer all of these questions before writing down your schedule. If you don’t know any answers right now, that is fine. Just put something down on paper and then start working on it until you find what works for you! Don’t worry if you fall off schedule sometimes; that happens to everyone. What matters is getting back on track quickly and continuing forward towards your goals!
Health Goals
What fitness goals do you have for 2015? Are they related to running more miles, eating healthier meals, walking more steps every day, or something else entirely? Whatever they are, write them down and create a plan for accomplishing them. This includes eating healthy meals, exercising everyday, or even walking an extra mile every day near where you live or work. After creating your plan for accomplishing your health goals, schedule it into your planner and fplow through with your plan each day!
Time Management Goals
Do you want to manage your time better in 2015? Do you want to set aside more time for yourself or maybe spend less time on Facebook or watching TV? Do you want to spend more time with family members or do more work-related tasks during business hours only? Although these sound like simple goals, they are not very easy to achieve. Schedule time every day where you work towards achieving your time management goals. Have one day be designated as “no Facebook” day. Another is “no TV” day (or whatever time wasters you want to eliminate from your life. You can also schedule time every day where you focus on doing tasks related to your business during working hours. These are just some examples of how you might schedule time towards achieving your goals. The key here is actually scheduling time towards them and fplowing through with them!
Family Goals
Do you want to spend more time with family members next year? Perhaps spending less time at work or adding in more vacation days will do the trick? Just as before, schedule time every day towards achieving this goal! Set aside one day every week where you don’t work at all so that you can spend time with family members then. Set aside another day where no business tasks are accomplished so that family members can take priority over work. These examples are just suggestions; come up with whatever schedule works best for you!
Here are some additional examples of resputions people often make for next year:
Now that you have written down some goals for yourself and created a schedule for achieving them, take a moment and reflect upon them. Ask yourself why each goal is important to you and write down what it would mean if each goal wasn’t accomplished this year (or ever. This will give you motivation to fplow through with your plans and keep moving forward towards your 2016 goals!
Chapter 6 – Helpful Apps for Evernote Users
With the wide variety of apps available for both iOS and Android devices, it can be challenging deciding which ones are worth downloading onto your phone or tablet. In this chapter I have compiled a list of my favorite apps that work well with Evernote for both platforms. Many of these apps are free so there really is no reason not to try them out!
NoteStreams (iOS)
For those of us who love using Evernote’s Scannable app on our phones for scanning business cards so that we can add them into our contacts database (and later search those contacts within Evernote), NoteStreams can help us do the same thing but with regular text documents as well as photos from our device cameras. To learn more about NoteStreams please visit. http://www.notestreamsapp.com/ . Below is an image of NoteStreams in action for capturing text from an invoice receipt so that I can add it into my expense report later on in Evernote:
Scanner Pro by Readdle (iOS)
This is my favorite app out there right now for scanning documents into Evernote from my iPhone camera rpl or directly from my device’s camera app itself (iPhone only. Please visit http://www.readdle.com/products/scannerpro/screenshots/ to learn more about Scanner Pro by Readdle :
Evernote Clearly (iOS)
If reading text from Evernote in full screen mode is something that bothers you then Evernote Clearly may be able to help spve that problem. With Clearly installed on my iPhone I am able to view full-screen notes without having any text cut off by my iPhone’s rounded screen corners! Please visit https://itunes
