I have used Zoho Writer and Bitly in my classroom. Zoho Writer is a free online word processing service. It provides all the basic functions of Microsoft Word, such as formatting and spell check. However, my favorite feature is the integrated bit.ly URL shortener. I use it to share links to websites with my students and track the number of clicks on each link.
Zoho Writer has created a “bitly” button that allows students to shorten web addresses. The button appears in the topbar at the top of the screen. Clicking on this button opens a popup window that allows students to type in a URL or copy and paste an existing link. A shortened version of the link will appear in the status bar below the topbar. Students can then click on this shortened version of the link to open it in a new tab. This allows them to quickly open multiple links without having to copy and paste each one into a new tab. The top also provides statistics about how many times a link has been clicked.
The integration of Zoho Writer and Bitly helps students understand how websites are structured. They see how a web address is made up of three parts. a protocp (http://), the website name (zoho.com. and the page name (writer. Students are able to see how long a URL is by watching the number of characters change as they play with different names for their writing projects. They also get to see how long a URL is when they see how long it takes to load when they open it in a new tab.
Students can conduct research using both Zoho Writer and Bitly. They can use Zoho Writer to write their assignments, including research papers, blog posts and articles for class assignments or online competitions like the National Writing Project’s “Why Write?” Writing Competition. They can use Bitly to shorten URLs for these projects so that I can easily track how many times students’ work has been read by other people on the Internet.
