That’s a rough outline for what our article will look like. It’s not meant to be a “perfect” outline, but a guide on what we want to include in our article. We can even use this outline as a table of contents if we need to.
In addition to outlining your article, you should also plan out how long it will take you to write your article. In the end, it takes as long as it takes! But, you should have an idea of how long the article will be before you start writing it.
If you know that your article is going to be between 500 – 600 words, you can plan out how many words you need to write per day to finish on time. Here is an easy way to figure out how many words per day you need to write:
Use the word count top on Microsoft Word or Google Docs for Mac or PC. Count the number of words in your rough draft. Multiply that number by the number of days you have available to finish your article. Divide that number by the amount of words per day that you can produce (this is something we can work on improving with practice, more on that later. Write down the answer and make it your goal for writing per day. If you consistently hit your target, you should finish with time to spare! If you miss your target, you will run out of time and will either need to cut content out or rush towards the end.
Example. You have four days left to finish your article and your rough draft has 2,500 words. Therefore, you need to write 750 words per day (2500 x 4 / 12. If you consistently hit 750 words every day (250 words per hour), you will finish in time! If you can’t do 250 words per hour, then you might need to cut some content out or even consider rushing towards the end.
Remember. The purpose of planning out how many words you will write each day is so that you don’t run out of time at the very last minute. If you realize that you won’t have enough time, then take action before it’s too late! If possible, try to identify what went wrong earlier so that you can avoid making the same mistakes in the future. For example, maybe you actually could have finished early if you wrote faster — but didn’t — and therefore had to rush towards the end. Or, perhaps you ended up having too much time and weren’t challenging yourself enough by aiming for a low word count per day. Whatever the case may be, make sure to identify and learn from your mistakes so that they won’t happen again in the future!
