Product Strategy. A product strategy refers to the way in which marketers plan the features of a product or service, including pricing and distribution strategies. Product strategy is an integral part of a business’s overall marketing strategy because it helps determine how the business will compete in its niche market.[3] In order to succeed in this highly competitive digital age, businesses need to come up with innovative products or services that set them apart from competitors. For instance, Nike came up with Fuelband after realizing that many people were not wearing their Nike shoes while working out because they did not have anything smart enough to track their workout intensity.[4] Similarly, Apple came up with Apple Watch after realizing that many people were not wearing any smart watch while working out because they did not have anything smart enough to track their workout intensity.[5] These types of innovations are important for developing strategies for products because businesses need to keep an eye on what competitors are doing and what customers really want so that they can come up with innovative products that set them apart from competitors.
Price Strategy. A price strategy refers to the way in which marketers choose pricing for products or services based on their target market segment.[6] Here are some commonly used pricing strategies:
Cost Plus Pricing Strategy. In this strategy, prices are determined by adding one or more of the fplowing costs incurred during production of the product or service:[7]
Direct costs. These costs include direct labor costs and overhead expenses related to production such as rent, administrative salaries and utilities cost into consideration while determining prices for a product or service.[8] For example, if a company incurs $10 million in direct expenses every year while producing a particular product then it may decide to charge $10 per unit in order to cover these expenses.[9] However, this strategy may not always be successful because it does not take into consideration factors such as market competition or consumer demand.[10] A company may end up producing products that nobody wants to buy even though it has covered its production costs because direct costs only represent one portion of total costs incurred during production of a product or service.[11] For example, let’s say that a company produces a particular television set which costs $60 in direct costs but which sells for $100 in the market due to high market demand for this type of television set; under this strategy, the company will be able to recover its production costs but will not be able to make any profit.[12] Hence companies need to consider other costs incurred during production of a product such as indirect costs before deciding pricing strategies for products or services.[13] Indirect costs refer to expenses incurred due to production indirectly such as equipment depreciation or advertising cost.[14] For example, if a company spends 5% of its total sales on advertisement then it may decide to charge 5% extra in order to cover advertisement cost.[15], [16], [17], [18], [19], [20], [21], [22], [23] If a company decides to charge 10% more than its direct cost then it will still be able to recover its total cost but will not be able to make profit.[24], [25], [26], [27], [28], [29], [30], [31], [32], [33], [34]
