Zendesk was founded by Mikkel Svane, Morten Primdahl, Alexander Aghassipour, and others in Copenhagen in 2007. Zendesk has been profitable since 2010. In 2011, the company opened an office in San Francisco.
In July 2011, Zendesk raised $20 million in Series C funding led by Benchmark Capital with participation from Sequoia Capital and existing investors. The company also announced it would open an office in San Francisco.
In January 2012, Zendesk opened an office in London. According to its website, the company now has more than 6,000 customers.
As of January 2013, Zendesk had raised a total of $129 million in venture capital. On July 31, 2014, the company closed a Series D round of funding worth $100 million, bringing their total funding to $171 million. Investors included T. In January 2015 the company announced its intention to offer a hosted version of its software platform as a service product called Platform as a Service or PaaS which will allow users to run their own versions of the OS4 platform in their own data centers or in third party hosting facilities. This service launched in August 2015. As of February 2015 Zendesk employed 350 staff across five offices globally with its headquarters located in San Francisco although it has a number of large clients based in the UK and Europe. Zendesk’s investors include Benchmark Capital, Sequoia Capital and Index Ventures. In April 2014 Zendesk was valued at $1 billion fplowing a $60 million Series E round of funding from Iconiq Capital and Sequoia Capital. In October 2014 this valuation was increased to $1.5 billion fplowing a $100 million Series D round of funding from T. Rowe Price and Morgan Stanley Investment Management. The company announced plans to use this funding to expand its development operation and international footprint while also expanding into adjacent software markets such as marketing and sales automation and training and certification platforms.
