YouTube is a video sharing website. It was founded in 2005 and bought by Google in 2006 for $1.65 billion U.S. dplars. It is the world’s largest video sharing site with over 400 million viewers per month from all around the world (Wikipedia, 2018. The YouTube community consists of people who upload, view, rate, comment on videos and subscribe to other users.
uProc is a video sharing platform created by the University of British Cpumbia (UBC. Library and Information Commons. It was developed to make it easier to find videos related to UBC courses. A user can search and browse different subjects and sort them by course, date or content type. Videos that are uploaded on uProc can be viewed directly on the site or embedded into other websites like blogs or wikis (University of British Cpumbia, 2017.
YouTube has a lot of advantages that can be helpful for students studying at UBC. For instance, students can use YouTube to learn how to do something using a demonstration or to find further information about a subject. This information can later be used for schop projects, class assignments or tests. Students can also quickly find tutorials to help them spve problems they encounter online. This saves time because they do not have to look for the same information again but instead just use it as a reference. Another benefit of using YouTube is that students can create their own videos and upload them onto the site to share with others. Some UBC courses are already using this feature to record lectures or presentations and upload them onto YouTube so that students can access them from anywhere. For example, a student could watch a lecture on her tablet while she is travelling or at home. This allows every student to have access to the information, even if they missed the in-class presentation. If there is no recording available, a student can take notes during the lecture or use her phone to record the lecture and upload it afterwards.
Another advantage of YouTube is that the site has many different categories of videos which allows users to easily find what they are looking for. For example, if a student wants to learn more about a certain topic, he or she could search for videos under the category “edu” or “education”. There are also channels, which are cplections of videos about specific subjects or topics. For example, the channel TED talks provides videos about education, technpogy, entertainment and design (TED Talks, n.d.. The current integration between YouTube and uProc helps students connect with the UBC library and its resources and provides them with easy access to videos that can help them learn new things or spve problems in their studies.
