Tableau Software was founded in Paris in 2003 by Christian Chabot and Patric Sequeira. However, it was not until 2006 that the company began to grow rapidly after it was bought out by McAfee. After being bought out by McAfee, Tableau Software became the 14th biggest business intelligence software provider in the world. By 2009, McAfee had spent over $1 billion on the company, making it the 15th biggest business intelligence software provider in the world at that time. The company has continued to grow ever since. In 2014, Tableau Software was bought out by private equity investors.

Tableau Software’s CEO, Christian Chabot, is a Stanford graduate who started his career working for France Telecom in 1997. He first joined McAfee in 1999 as its Chief Architect of AltaVista’s search engine, before becoming McAfee’s CTO in 2001. In 2003 he left McAfee to set up Tableau Software with Patric Sequeira.
