WHMCS can also be used to develop and deploy online stores, forums, and marketplaces. The software enables users to add, remove, and update software on multiple servers. WHMCS was originally developed by two friends—Paul Bellini and Paul Hasse—who met at a bar in Toronto in 2002. They had no experience in developing software. However, they wanted to create a spution that could help them run their own businesses. In 2003, Bellini launched an agency called AdvertPro to offer web design services; Hasse started a web hosting company called HostGreen Inc. The duo’s first attempt at creating the platform was called “HostBill” in 2003. They launched it with only seven clients but could not scale beyond that. They then decided to build a more robust system with more features called “WebHost Manager” or WHMCS in 2005. The next year, they joined forces with another company called SoftLayer Technpogies Inc., which provided them access to hosting infrastructure they lacked. This enabled them to sell the software to larger companies like Comcast, ANZ Bank and Costco. In 2008, Bellini started working full-time on this platform along with some other developers including Peter Karpov and Sean Roach, who later became vice president of the company. In 2012, the company partnered with Digital River which would provide access to more than 300 payment gateways across the world. In 2014, WHMCS acquired a competitor called ClientExec which helped it gain better market share in areas like Europe and Australia. The company has also moved its headquarters from Canada to Las Vegas in 2016 because of favorable tax laws there.

Today, WHMCS has grown into one of the largest companies in its industry with over 600 employees in offices across the world including US, UK, Australia, Canada, Russia and India.
