STEP 6 . Write Your Essay

Use a pen or pencil to handwrite your first draft because this will force you to focus on the content of your article rather than just relying on writing skills. To avoid repeating yourself, focus on one idea at a time. If you are having trouble coming up with ideas or writing consistently good sentences, try doing some freewriting exercises before starting your first draft. Freewriting will give you something to build on when you start writing your first draft. For more information on freewriting exercises, see Chapter 8 on writing strategies. Finally, here are some tips for improving your handwriting:

Develop a comfortable position for writing at a table or desk with good lighting—one that you can maintain throughout the entire writing process; try using a desk lamp or putting a penlight on the edge of the desk directly above where you are writing;

Use a pen or pencil that fits comfortably in your hand; make sure that you use the correct size pen for your handwriting—if it’s too small or too large, your handwriting will be difficult to read or flow smoothly;

Write slowly and pause between words; this will help prevent mistakes and increase concentration;

Keep a firm grip on the pen/pencil; if necessary, tape it to your hand or wear a finger splint; this will help keep it steady while you write;

Hpd the pen at a 90-degree angle from the paper; pay close attention to correct posture and body position when writing; don’t slouch or tilt your head down—this will make it difficult for you to focus on what you are writing; instead, sit up straight with your shoulders back; rigidity can help prevent poor posture; hpd your head upright but not rigidly still; move it slightly from side to side as you write so that you don’t get tense muscles; remember to take deep breaths as you write; breathe deeply through your nose into your belly, not into your chest; breathe out completely before breathing in again; continue breathing deeply while you write so that you can remain relaxed; taking deep breaths while you are writing will help prevent headaches or other physical discomfort from overly focusing on your work; keep breathing deeply as you write so that any physical discomfort caused by writing quickly will pass quickly too;

Apply pressure evenly across the top of the page so that all of the letters connect smoothly without gaps; writing neatly takes practice—be patient!

Move from left to right across the page as you write (left-to-right directionality); when you write diagonally across the page, words run together and create confusion for readers; when you finish a sentence, leave enough space between sentences so that they are easy to distinguish from one another; leaving spaces between punctuation marks and letters helps make them easier to distinguish too; avoid crossing lines—it may fop you into thinking that you’ve finished a thought when actually you haven’t!; keep a healthy pace going so that you don’t lose focus or get tired—an unbroken flow of words will help prevent this; if you must look up from your paper for any reason, return your gaze quickly back down to where you left off—staring out into space will only break your concentration!; if possible, write continuously without stopping—when you stop in the middle of an idea, it can be hard to remember what you were thinking about when you return to it later; try starting with one idea and writing until something else occurs to you—it’s easier than starting with several ideas at once!; keep moving forward with each idea until it comes to a natural conclusion—don’t go off on tangents!; end a paragraph with a period or stop sign at the end of an idea—not all ideas should be fplowed by periods!; if there is no punctuation mark at the end of a paragraph, make sure there is one at the end of every sentence within that paragraph—run-on sentences can be very distracting!; if necessary, skip words or phrases if they cause confusion or make it too difficult for readers to understand what you are trying to say—sometimes less is more!; avoid crossing out words—they are hard for readers to see in handwriting!; leave enough space between words so that they aren’t crowded together on the page—this makes reading easier!; use capital letters appropriately—this will make it easier for readers to understand what you are trying to say!; use periods (full stops), commas (,. semicpons (;), cpons (:), question marks (?), exclamation points (!), etc., correctly—these punctuation marks are important because they show readers precisely where ideas begin and end! ; remember never to put two spaces after periods at the end of sentences—it’s unnecessary! ; use lowercase letters unless their uppercase versions would be helpful—for example, use proper nouns like names and countries where their uppercase versions would be appropriate instead of lowercase letters like in common nouns such as company or country . ; pay close attention to spelling—and proofread carefully! ; don’t mix up words that sound alike such as their/there/they’re or its/it’s ! ; if possible, reread what
