If you are writing a research paper, your outline may look very different. But the point is clear – with an outline, you have a map with which to write your article or research paper. You can see where you are going, so you know how to get there. And an outline is also a great way to start writing. You know what you need to say, and it’s more or less in order. So you can dive into your first paragraph (or first sentence. knowing that there is at least some structure to the piece.
So if you are having trouble starting, look at your outline. Ask yourself some questions like, “What do I need to say next?” or “What point am I making now?” or “What do I want the reader to remember later on?” If you know the answers to these questions, you can write more easily.
To finish this section, here is one final tip for writing articles or doing research papers. Write that first draft without editing! Let yourself go wild and just write. This way, you will have a finished first draft of your work by the end of the day. Then take some time off from it – an hour, a day, whatever works for you – and then edit it. You will be amazed at what you find when you edit. And you will be so glad not to be working on your first draft anymore!
