Both Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud and Microsoft Office 365 are cloud services. They both provide online services that users can access from any remote location or device. Pricing starts from $5 per user per month for a single user who uses a limited set of services such as email, calendar and document storage. Pricing may vary based on the number of users and consumption of additional features. However, the enterprise plans have been discontinued due to lack of interest from customers. AWS states that “Amazon will continue to invest in building new features and functionality with the aim of supporting richer integrations with existing deployments of Microsoft products”. In contrast to Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, Microsoft Office 365 has no limit on the amount of data that can be stored in your organization’s OneDrive storage account. Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud has a restriction of 1TB which was originally implemented to prevent the use of Amazon EC2 as a backup spution by customers who had a primary storage system in place. The restriction was later relaxed so that backups could also be stored on Amazon EC2 instances. However, there are still various restrictions in place on what can be stored using Amazon EC2 instances including licensing restrictions on software such as Windows Server 2003 which is prevented from being installed on virtual machines running on Amazon EC2 instances. Such licensing restrictions do not apply to Microsoft Office 365 which allows users to install third-party software such as Windows Server 2003 on their virtual machines running on Azure VMs even if it is not supported by Microsoft. The pricing for Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud instances is based on hourly usage while the pricing for Azure VMs is based on monthly consumption (for both compute and storage. Pricing starts from $0.07 per hour while pricing for Azure VMs start from $0.12 per hour depending on the region where they are located. Storage costs can be calculated based on the number of IOPS (Input/Output Operations Per Second. required which is calculated by multiplying Read IOPS (Input/Output Operations Per Second. by Write IOPS (Input/Output Operations Per Second. There are different billing rates for Premium Storage based on an hourly rate or monthly consumption based on GB stored or MB stored per second consumed. There are no upfront commitments or minimum fees required for Office 365 except the setup fee of $25 per user which covers all costs associated with setting up an account including domain name registration or federation with existing domains, migration assistance for users who are already using Microsoft Office products/services, etc. Unless you have an existing Microsoft Office license in place, you will need to purchase a license for each user under your subscription plan before you can use the service. However, you can purchase 5 licenses at once for $150 which means you will pay $30 per month for up to 5 users which are paid annually instead of monthly. However, this license agreement does not extend to commercial versions of Office although it includes versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Publisher and Access which are commonly used in most organizations. The advantage of using Amazon EC2 over Azure VMs is that you can easily launch an instance without having to manage any infrastructure components in your own datacenter which is managed by AWS itself. This frees up more time for developing an application instead of managing servers or dealing with downtime when servers crash or need maintenance work to be done on them. In comparison to Amazon EC2 instances which are charged based on hourly usage, Azure VMs are charged based on monthly consumption which means you will be charged every month regardless of whether your VM was used or not during that month. Instance pricing depends on the region where your instance is located and the type of instance that you choose to run such as General Purpose or Burstable Performance Instances. Instance pricing can be reduced further through Reserved Instances where you commit to paying a higher upfront cost in order to get lower instance pricing up to three years which reduces your total cost over three years compared to buying individual instance instances every month during this period. For example, if you pay $1,000 upfront for an M3 large instance which costs $0.095 per hour but only use it for 40 hours in a month then you would end up paying $50 per month instead of $60 per month if you bought separate instances each month while using the same reserved instance during this period instead. There are no upfront costs required for Azure VMs unlike AWS instances which requires an upfront cost before you can start using them unlike reserved instances which you can start using during the first year without paying any additional money after committing to pay one-time upfront sum during sign-up.
