Vimeo was founded in November 2004 by a group of Web video pioneers and creators. It is the first video-sharing site to support high-definition video, as well as the first to support HDV and AVCHD formats. In May 2005, Vimeo launched its long-awaited "Pro" tier, which allows users to upload longer videos of up to 40 minutes each. On June 21, 2007, Vimeo announced that it would no longer allow pornography or sexually explicit content on its site. This decision has drawn some criticism from users and content creators alike.
In addition to being able to submit videos through the site's main website, users can also upload them directly from the site's embedded players. In early 2006, Vimeo implemented an audio-only playback option in addition to the standard video playback for registered users.
In March 2007, Vimeo teamed with Apple to provide free streaming video trailers for TV shows with the release of the Apple TV. As part of this deal, Vimeo became the online video distributor of movies from Paramount Pictures and Disney, while Apple became Vimeo's distribution partner for films from Lions Gate Entertainment, DreamWorks Pictures and Sony Pictures.

On September 14, 2012, Vimeo announced that in order to compete against services such as YouTube and Hulu, the company would change its royalty structure on November 1, 2012. On March 13, 2011, Vimeo launched Vimeo on Demand (VOD), offering sellers a self-service platform to host their own videos for sale. The launch included over 60 different organizations in the film and video community. 
On December 9, 2012, Vimeo began requiring that comments on videos be made via a Facebook account. This effectively stops the practice of comments being posted anonymously under videos. As of 2018, Vimeo no longer requires user accounts for commenting on videos.
On September 23, 2013, Vimeo announced a partnership with Creative Commons and received an investment from IAC that allowed it to acquire Livestream. On December 3, 2014, Vimeo and Jukin Media announced a content partnership to release several thousand videos from the Jukin Media library on Vimeo.
In 2016, Vimeo teamed up with Intel and Cisco to release virtual reality projects through their Internet of Things (IoT. platform.
As of 2017, Vimeo serves over 200 million unique visitors per month. 85% of these are located outside of the United States. The company employs approximately 150 people in New York City and is headquartered at 555 Washington Street in SoHo.
