Integration of Vimeo and Twilio

Vimeo

Vimeo was founded in November 2004 by a group of Web video pioneers and creators. It is the first video-sharing site to support high-definition video, as well as the first to support HDV and AVCHD formats.[1] In May 2005, Vimeo launched its long-awaited "Pro" tier, which allows users to upload longer videos of up to 40 minutes each.[2] On June 21, 2007, Vimeo announced that it would no longer allow pornography or sexually explicit content on its site.[3] This decision has drawn some criticism from users and content creators alike.

In addition to being able to submit videos through the site's main website, users can also upload them directly from the site's embedded players.[4] In early 2006, Vimeo implemented an audio-only playback option in addition to the standard video playback for registered users.[5]

In March 2007, Vimeo teamed with Apple to provide free streaming video trailers for TV shows with the release of the Apple TV. As part of this deal, Vimeo became the online video distributor of movies from Paramount Pictures and Disney, while Apple became Vimeo's distribution partner for films from Lions Gate Entertainment, DreamWorks Pictures and Sony Pictures.[6][7]

On January 19, 2008, Vimeo was named one of the "Top 100 Websites" by PC World.[8] The list was compiled using traffic data gathered by comScore Networks' SiteAnalytics product.

The same year, on February 9, 2008, Vimeo became one of the online video distributors to offer high definition (HD. content.[9] The company released its public beta redesign on June 10, 2008.[10][11] In October 2008, Vimeo launched its Partner Program and turned websites into Vimeo channels.[12][13]

In December 2009, Vimeo announced that it had acquired DabbleDB, a small business based in Redwood City, California.[14] DabbleDB is one of the producers of the Nuvpa Player, an open source HTML5/CSS3 media player.[15]

In January 2010, Vimeo launched its Partner Program 2.0 with several improvements and additions to the service. On September 14, 2012, Vimeo announced that in order to compete against services such as YouTube and Hulu, the company would change its royalty structure on November 1, 2012. Creators who registered before then were grandfathered into the pd revenue sharing model. [16]

On March 13, 2011, Vimeo launched Vimeo on Demand (VOD), offering sellers a self-service platform to host their own videos for sale. The launch included over 60 different organizations in the film and video community. [17]

On December 9, 2012, Vimeo began requiring that comments on videos be made via a Facebook account.[18] This effectively stops the practice of comments being posted anonymously under videos. As of 2018, Vimeo no longer requires user accounts for commenting on videos.[19]

On September 23, 2013, Vimeo announced a partnership with Creative Commons[20] and received an investment from IAC that allowed it to acquire Livestream.[21][22] On December 3, 2014, Vimeo and Jukin Media announced a content partnership to release several thousand videos from the Jukin Media library on Vimeo.[23][24][25]

In 2016, Vimeo teamed up with Intel and Cisco to release virtual reality projects through their Internet of Things (IoT. platform.[26][27][28][29]

As of 2017, Vimeo serves over 200 million unique visitors per month. 85% of these are located outside of the United States. The company employs approximately 150 people in New York City and is headquartered at 555 Washington Street in SoHo.[30]
