Section II. Paragraphs
Now, the article should be filled in to make it a full-fledged article. It can be written in any number of paragraphs, but for this example we will use three paragraphs. If you want to read an article with more than three paragraphs, you can find one here. The first paragraph should introduce the topic and state your thesis (e.g. The Unification of Vimeo and Tumblr will bring many benefits to both companies. The second paragraph should be used to support your thesis with specific examples (e.g. Since the two sites would be sharing users’ information, they could create a social network that would allow users to interact with each other and share content. The third paragraph should be used to summarize the main points and bring the article to a close (e.g. Therefore, Unification of Vimeo and Tumblr would be a wise choice for both companies. Now we have a full article to work with. All we need to do now is revise it for grammar and spelling mistakes. For example, if you notice that there are quite a few spelling mistakes in the writing sample above, you could fix them by replacing them with words that are spelled correctly or pasting the correct version into your document. You could also try finding and replacing misspelled words yourself using a computer program like Microsoft Word’s Find and Replace top. If you don’t have Microsoft Word, you can use a free online top like Google Docs’ Find and Replace top, which allows you to perform a Find and Replace action on text within a document, as opposed to changing all the instances of a word throughout the entire document, as Microsoft Word does. These tops can be used to change any text that has been added. In addition to correcting spelling mistakes, you can also revise your article for grammar mistakes. The best way to do this is to read it out loud while looking at it on a computer screen or printout. This will allow you to catch grammar mistakes that a regular spell checker might not recognize, such as sentences that include words that should be capitalized but have not been spelled correctly (e.g. “I” instead of “I”. After you have corrected your sentences for grammar mistakes, you can begin correcting them for sentence structure mistakes. For example, if the writing sample above has sentences that are too long or too short, you can break long sentences into smaller ones or join together shorter ones to form longer ones. Another way to revise sentence structure is by rephrasing sentences that are too complicated or convputed. To do this, simply look for ways to rephrase the sentence in simpler terms (e.g. Instead of saying “if I were you, I would…” say “I would…”. Finally, after all of your sentences have been corrected for grammar and spelling mistakes, you can begin revising your article for proper writing style. While spelling and grammar mistakes are easy to correct with computer software, writing style is much harder to fix (especially if you are not trained in English literature or writing. However, there are some things you can do to work on your writing style without getting too technical about it. First, you can try using transition words when transitioning between paragraphs. For example, instead of just saying “one paragraph says…” you could say “one paragraph says that…” or “the next paragraph states…” This applies not just to moving between paragraphs but also moving between sections within sections (e.g. Instead of saying “this section says…” say “this section says that…”. Furthermore, you could try experimenting with sentence length by breaking up very long sentences into smaller ones or combining shorter ones into longer ones (e.g. Instead of saying “I visited Vimeo on July 30th, 2014” say “On July 30th, 2014, I visited Vimeo”. Finally, you could look through your article for words that are overly complicated or academic-sounding (e.g. Instead of saying “during my visit on July 30th, 2014…” say “During my visit on July 30th, 2014…”. Be careful when doing this though because it can make your writing boring if overdone. As you can see from the sample article above, the writer used several transition words between paragraphs (e.g. “Moreover” transitioning into the second paragraph. along with some phrases that are more cploquial than formal (e.g. “…If I were…” instead of “…Should I decide…”. By revising your articles with simple techniques like these, you will be able to create better articles every time.
