Integration of Vimeo and Google Groups

On 22 July 2011, Google announced that it will be integrating different video services with Google Groups. The introduction of this new integration is part of the effort of Google to take contrp of the Internet and the film industry. The main idea behind this move is to make Google Groups a place where people can share videos and other files that they like in an easy and accessible way. This new change in Google Groups can be seen as a spution to the problem that Google Groups used to face in its early years; when it was launched, it was not only an online discussion forum but also a place where people used to share their own content. As the integration of Vimeo and Google Groups is concerned, this website has two distinct functions. First, it acts as a video hosting service where users can upload their own videos so that they can share them with people all over the world. According to Google, there are two main reasons why this website was integrated with Google Groups.     Vimeo is a video hosting website which was founded in 2004 by Haim Schoppik and Zach Klein.[20] The main idea behind the creation of Vimeo was that many people were uploading their own videos on YouTube and sharing them with others for free or against payment even though these users themselves could not watch those videos because they did not have broadband connections or fast enough computers.[21] In order to contain this problem, Vimeo was introduced as a site where anyone can upload their own videos but no one can watch those videos unless he has a fast internet connection.[22] Additionally, unlike YouTube where people can upload content freely without any limitation, Vimeo requires that uploaded files should be shorter than ten minutes.[23] In addition to that, a member who wants to upload a file requires a Vimeo Pro account which costs $199 per year.[24] Another important difference between these two services is that members of Vimeo can sell their files through the “On Demand” section of its website whereas members of YouTube can’t do so.[25] In addition to selling videos on its website, Vimeo also offers opportunities for its members to have their own channels on its website.[26] These channels are similar to Youtube channels except that they are free for everyone.[27] Another important difference between these two sites is that paid subscribers of a channel can view a member’s content without ads whereas members of YouTube have to watch ads every time they watch a video whether they have subscribed or not.[28] To conclude, Vimeo is mostly used for sharing short videos with audiences who are willing to pay although members can also upload longer files but they need fast internet connection in order to view them.[29]

    Google launched its first service called “Google Video” in 2005.[30] This service allowed users to upload their own videos on the website but unfortunately it had some problems which made it fail shortly after its inception.[31] One year later, on 1 October 2006, “Google Groups” was launched as another service for sharing videos.[32] This service was similar to Vimeo in many ways; for example, members could upload short clips just like members of Youtube but members could not view these clips unless they had high-speed internet connection.[33] Also, members of this service had no contrp over their content because everything that they uploaded on this site became property of Google.[34] Besides that, there were many problems with user interface; for example, if someone wanted to view his favorite video clip, he had to go through hundreds of video files before finding it.[35] Consequently, people who used Google Groups were usually disappointed because it had no unique features except for the ability to share existing content with others.[36] It seemed that despite many efforts made by Google Group’s developers, this service still lagged behind its competitors such as FaceBook or LinkedIn because it lacked some important functionalities such as communication tops.[37] Then, on 22 July 2011, something changed; Google announced that it would integrate Vimeo into its service.[38] So now, if you want to share your video clips with other users on Google Groups or you want to find out what other people are uploading on this site, you can do so by visiting www.googlegroups.com/videosharing/.
