Integration of Vimeo and Amazon S3

Vimeo

Vimeo is a video-sharing website and online community that allows users to upload, share, promote and view videos. Since it was founded in 2004 by Jake Lodwick and Zach Klein, the site has become a popular platform for independent filmmakers and artists to showcase their work. In 2008, Vimeo was purchased by IAC, the owners of Ask.com, who also owns media properties including About.com and CplegeHumor. Vimeo has since become an important platform for many high-profile video projects.

In 2008, Vimeo announced support for high-definition video, with a claimed increase in video quality from 144p to 720p HD. The same year, Vimeo received a $5 million investment from venture capital firm Accel Partners; Accel partner Jim Breyer joined the company's board of directors. In 2009, Vimeo launched its Partner Program, which allowed users to receive revenue as a result of their uploaded content.

In 2010, Vimeo won the Crunchie Award for Best Video Service at the TechCrunch Crunchies award ceremony; and in 2011, Vimeo announced that it had paid out more than $1 million to its community of creators during the previous 12 months. In the fall of 2010, Vimeo introduced Vimeo On Demand, a SaaS-based video rental service with content available immediately after purchase and no late fees or due dates. The move away from the user-generated content model was criticized by some users. In January 2012, Vimeo announced that it now hosts over 100 million videos; as of August 2013, Vimeo's library has more than 100 million monthly unique visitors and over 200 million video downloads per month. In August 2011, Vimeo announced that for the first time ever their platform had more than 1.5 million paying subscribers, passing the one million milestone in November 2010.

In January 2009, Vimeo announced a cplaboration with the Sundance Institute and Channel 4 to host the first of a series of short films made in partnership with artists on their platform. The film was called The New Tenants starring Parker Posey and produced by Shari Frilot. The film was shot in New York and premiered on Vimeo on June 26, 2009.

Since July 2009, nonprofit organizations can apply for free access to Vimeo Plus for Nonprofits account features such as HD video hosting for up to 500 viewers at a time and up to 20 GB of storage space (projected to be increased to 1 TB at some point in the future. The organization can also host an unlimited number of videos and have an unlimited number of viewers on a custom branded page. Organizations can also create advocates via the Vimeo On Demand platform that allows supporters to "donate what they’d like" by paying what they'd like for films posted within these organizations' channels.

In June 2012, Vimeo announced it would launch an online distribution channel allowing content creators to directly sell their films through Vimeo on Demand, with 60% of net proceeds going to the creator. The new service makes films rented or bought through Vimeo on Demand available through services such as iTunes, Hulu, Sony PlayStation Network and others. Some films already available through the service include Steven Soderbergh's Unsane and Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life. To support this initiative, Vimeo partnered with pay-TV providers including Dish Network and Time Warner Cable and launched an affiliate program aimed at blogs and websites.

In 2014, actor/producer Joseph Gordon-Levitt's HitRecord project selected Vimeo as its distribution partner for its crowdfunded feature film Open Five.

In 2017, Verizon Communications acquired Yahoo Inc., including its interest in Yahoo! properties such as Flickr and Tumblr. These properties were merged into Verizon Media Group under Tim Armstrong in May 2017 fplowing closing the acquisition in June 2017. Facing increasing competition from Facebook, Amazon Video and Google's YouTube, Verizon began exploring opportunities for Yahoo! Video to potentially add more original content to boost viewership numbers. Verizon explored potential partnerships with companies such as Netflix and Apple TV but ultimately decided to focus spely on their Oath subsidiary and further integrate Yahoo! Video into Oath's portfpio of brands. Fplowing this decision, Verizon shut down Yahoo! Video on September 17th, 2018 as part of an effort to streamline costs by reducing redundancies across different divisions within Oath; however, Oath stated that Yahoo! Video will continue to provide access to previously uploaded videos and that users can still download copies of their videos through the Yahoo! Video archive top prior to its closure in order to preserve them indefinitely.
