It is the biggest live streaming service for video games. Twitch was founded in June 2011 by Justin Kan and Emmett Shear, as a spin-off of the general-interest streaming platform Justin.tv. The website primarily focuses on game live streaming, including broadcasts of esports competitions, in addition to music broadcasts, creative content, and more recently, “in real life” streams.
Twitch is a live streaming platform that focuses primarily on video gaming content. The popularity of Twitch eclipsed that of its general-interest counterpart. In October 2013, the website had 45 million unique viewers, compared to Justin.tv’s 35 million. At the same time, Justin.tv was continuing to add users rapidly; as of August 2013, it had 18 million registered users.
In February 2014, the website had about 1.5 million broadcasters and 100 million visitors per month. As of January 2017, Twitch remained the leading live streaming video platform for video game enthusiasts.
There are two types of channels on Twitch – there are ‘partnered’ channels which allows the broadcaster to run ads and receive donations from fans, and there is also ‘non-partnered’ channels which does not allow either of these two features. Partners are able to receive subscription fees from their fans via ‘Super Chats’ or subscriptions. Non-partnered channels are supported by subscribers who pay a monthly subscription fee to access extra features, such as emoticons.
Gaming companies use Twitch to help connect with new players and promote their games. some major companies have integrated Twitch into their strategy, with mixed success; it is also used as a primary marketing top for other companies like NVIDIA and Sony, who have created their own Twitch channels around their products.
Game developers Electronic Arts (EA. built an integration directly into Battlefront II, for its release in 2017; this makes it easier for players to stream their games via EA’s channel on Twitch. This can be seen as a benefit for EA – they get publicity through channels they don’t directly contrp, and Twitch gets more traffic through increased use of its site by gamers. However, this also gave rise to controversy surrounding the publisher’s concept of “pay-to-win” loot boxes (randomly generated items that contain gameplay modifiers. The integration allowed players to purchase loot boxes for real currency via microtransactions. Many gamers were outraged at this idea because they felt it was unfair to the players who did not spend any money on the game.
In June 2014, Twitch added a new feature known as ‘Cheering’ which allows viewers to donate money to streamers using virtual ‘Bits’ purchased from Amazon Payments.[56] The viewers can also buy special badges as a token of appreciation. These badges cost between $0.99 cents and $4.99 US dplars which will then be displayed on screen and give the viewer a variety of custom emoticons to use during the stream. Along with Cheering, there is Cheer Chat where viewers can donate Bits in a chat room to show their support for the streamer and interact with other members of the community. The interactive chat room was inspired by “Twitch Plays Pokemon” and was based on a previous community event on Justin.tv where viewers could place bets on different outcomes using Justin.tv chat commands like !bet or !bets
