Seamus O’ Reilly, the co-founder of Twitch.tv which is a live streaming video platform for gamers, was believed to have found the company in 2011 after working for some years at Justin.tv where he became very familiar with live streaming videos. Twitch which was named Justin.tv at the beginning was started by Justin Kan who was the founder of Justin.tv. Seamus O’ Reilly also served as the COO of Twitch before joining Y Combinator for his new startup called Altitude Games where he served as CEO for about 6 months before he decided to rejoin Twitch. The company raised $35 million in Series B funding in 2012 from Bessemer Venture Partners, Alsop Louie Partners and WestSummit Capital although it had received its initial funding from Y Combinator earlier in 2011.
The company went on further to raise another $20 million in Series C funding in 2014 which was led by Thrive Capital and completed by existing investors Bessemer Venture Partners, Alsop Louie Partners and WestSummit Capital. In 2016, Twitch announced that they would be accepting Bitcoin as a payment method for their premium services and subsequently received an additional $10 million in Series D funding from Vy Capital after raising $15 million in Series E funding from Tiger Global Management and other existing investors. This year, the company has already raised $150 million which is the highest amount raised by any gaming company as it aims to compete against Google’s YouTube Gaming and Facebook’s Facebook Live.
