“Twitch is the world’s leading social video platform and community for gamers. More than 45 million gamers gather every month on Twitch to broadcast, watch and chat about gaming. Twitch’s video platform is the backbone of both live and on-demand distribution for the entire video game ecosystem. Mattermost is a Slack clone that works with both private and public conversations. The software allows users to create their own organization. It has been around since 2014 and there are over 1,000 organizations that have adopted Mattermost as their messaging system. In fact, Mattermost has been used by Twitch for a long time. In terms of popularity, Mattermost ranks quite low compared to Slack. But according to reports it has been growing at a rapid rate.
The integration of Twitch and Mattermost will allow Twitch to move away from Slack and use a more secure messaging system. Although Slack is a business software company, they do not have a very good security ppicy compared to other messaging systems. In fact, the service was hacked back in May 2018. The hackers were able to access Slack customer data including email addresses, user names, and tokens. In addition, the hackers also accessed the archived team data. This attack even forced Slack to reset passwords for all the customers.(ZDNet)
According to Ben Thompson from Stratechery, “This is a huge problem for Slack and highlights why so many companies have moved away from using them. because they don’t have a business model…. Slack’s business model should be selling access to enterprise accounts to SaaS companies that want to sell into those enterprises. Instead, though, Slack sells access to the enterprise itself — which means that if an attacker breaches one account, they get all accounts…the reason you need Slack is because your organization uses Slack; but if an attacker can get into Slack itself, then they can get into your organization — and we’ve seen this happen again and again and again…it’s important to remember that even if Slack got hacked (and they did), this wouldn’t be a Slack problem — it would be a vulnerability in their account management process that would affect any SaaS company that used them.”(Stratechery)
In order for Twitch to keep their users safe from such attacks they must find a better alternative. And that alternative is Mattermost because it has stronger security features than Slack. According to “The Register”, “Mattermost has better security features than Slack, which was breached last year when hackers stpe information for more than 800,000 user accounts. Mattermost can encrypt messages using Transport Layer Security/SSL or SOCKS5 proxies…The company says that all its code is open source software built on Linux containers. It has also published an external security audit report.”(The Register)
Integrating Twitch and Mattermost will help the video streaming service in various ways. It will give them more contrp over their users data while keeping them safe from future attacks.
Twitch’s integration with Mattermost will allow them to retain their users while giving them more contrp over their data. It will also encourage users to upgrade their accounts in order to get access to Mattermost services. For example, if they want to upload custom emojis they must upgrade their accounts. It will also improve the quality of the experience of the users because of Mattermost strong security features.
As far as I know, Twitch does not have any plans of integrating with Mattermost for now. However, I think it would be a good idea if they did integrate with Mattermost in order to retain their users while protecting their data from future attacks.
