Integration of Tumblr and MongoDB

In this article I am going to discuss the integration of Tumblr and MongoDB, how it is beneficial for both services, and the future plans of the companies.

Tumblr is a free social networking website that uses microblogging platform. It allows users to create a profile, express themselves by sharing content from the web and blogs, and connect with other users via their network. The service has gained popularity as a platform for social activism and ppitical debate, and as a result it has been regularly criticized for its unmoderated content.

MongoDB is a cross-platform document-oriented database program which can be classified as a NoSQL database program as it does not use SQL as query language. It was created by 10gen, now owned by MongoDB Inc. Although it has a commercial license, the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPL. permits anyone to use it for any purpose as long as modified software carries a copy of the AGPL license too and all code is made available under the AGPL. MongoDB is commonly used in web development to store data that has no schema, making it a popular choice for Web 2.0 applications. It can be used as a replacement for MySQL and SQL Server; however it is not a drop-in replacement because it uses its own drivers and query language.

Tumblr and MongoDB are both very good at what they do, but together they can do amazingly well. The Tumblr blog is an excellent example for the integration of these two services. The blog is powered by MongoDB which stores all the data about text, pictures, blogs etc.

The integration between Tumblr and MongoDB helps both parties in two ways. Firstly, it helps Tumblr because there is no need to handle huge amounts of data on their servers, rather they pass the data to the MongoDB servers where it is stored safely. This reduces load on Tumblr’s servers which in turn allows them to host more blogs on their site. Also, this gives them the ability to scale up their servers if needed.

Secondly, it helps MongoDB because they get access to more data which they can use to sell more storage space to other organizations who are willing to pay for it. As more blogs are hosted on Tumblr, there will be more data being stored on MongoDB’s servers which will help them to increase their revenue.

In conclusion I would like to say that I believe that this pairing is an excellent one. By joining forces, both companies have better chances of success than if they did so separately. The main reason behind this is that these two companies have complementary skills which allow them to benefit from each other’s expertise.
