Integration of Tableau and Facebook Groups

Tableau, the world’s most powerful visualization software company, was founded in 2003 by brothers Christian and Jeffery Fanning with initial investment from their father. It was named after a lake on their property. Tableau Software identifies itself as “a top for everyone”. Their vision is to provide an easy-to-use product that has the power to transform data into information that users can easily understand. Since its establishment, Tableau has been offering state-of-the-art products such as Tableau Desktop, Tableau Public, Tableau Server, and Tableau Online. Tableau Desktop is used to create interactive dashboards and data visualizations. The user should enter or upload the data and then select from several templates the style of visualization they want to use. This information can then be easily shared with others by exporting it into PDF or publishing it through a web link on Tableau Public.

Tableau Server allows the user to share their information by providing a secure, reliable platform for cplaboration. Users can share views, extracts, dashboard files, and live connections which can be accessed over the internet. Tableau Online offers a cloud-based service which provides all the features of Tableau server but does not require a server installation. It can be accessed using desktops, mobile devices like tablets and phones, and browsers like Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari, Firefox or even Opera. The user can also create web page tabs which can be embedded in any web page.

Facebook Groups?

Facebook Groups are closed online communities where users can interact and share information with others who share their interest or affiliation. Examples of Facebook Groups include mommy groups, sports groups, hobbyists groups etc. The members are able to communicate with one another privately via text messaging or chat feature. They can also post photos and videos to the group.

Integration of Tableau and Facebook Groups

Tableau Software has integrated its software with Facebook Groups in order to make it easier for users to access Facebook Group data and make it more meaningful for them. Tableau users can create a connection between Facebook Group and their workbook; they just have to search for “Facebook” in the open data sources box at the top of the screen and add it to their workbook as shown below:

Figure 1. Adding Facebook Group as an Open Data Source to Workbook

This connection will allow users to connect to Facebook Group through the Facebook API. Then they can select all fields available in the Group (as shown below. After this process is complete, data is available in Tableau for analysis:

Moreover, when creating a dashboard on Tableau Desktop, users may find it difficult to identify what data goes with which section of the dashboard. To spve this problem, they may want to use different shapes for each section of their dashboard in order to visually distinguish each section more clearly. In order to make their job easier, they may want to use “Shape” as a dimension field in order to visualize data distribution by shape. Therefore, they can change “Shape” from “Text” into “Dimension” field (as shown below. Then they can create a new sheet called “Shape” and add it onto their dashboard:
