POWER STRUGGLE. ANSWERING THE CASE QUESTIONS

    Case Question 1 (Continuation)

    • When asked why he didn’t respond to questions about his romantic relationship with Carly, Jack said that he wanted to keep his personal life separate from his professional life. He said he was focused on his work throughout his entire career at Rossum Corporation, as it had nothing to do with his personal life. He said that he had never discussed his personal life with anyone who worked for him and he did not want to start now. Jack has consistently emphasized that there is no room for romance among his employees because it will distract them from their work. When asked on several occasions if he thought it was possible for employees invpved in a romantic relationship to maintain their productivity levels after they started dating, Jack said no, because they would be distracted by the relationship and would become less productive at work than employees who were single. He said that if he found out two of his employees were dating, he would fire both of them immediately because it would be impossible for them to continue to meet their work objectives if they were distracted by a relationship. Jack has always been very strict about maintaining professional boundaries between himself and his employees; therefore, many people believe that he may be in love with Carly but is afraid to admit it because he fears it might affect their relationship at work. However, Carly has repeatedly stated that she doesn’t think Jack loves her and just wants to protect himself from any potential backlash from his investors if they find out about their relationship. She insists that Jack’s actions are motivated by self-interest rather than genuine concern for her welfare. She has said that she is convinced that Jack wants to keep her under his contrp at all times so she won’t betray him by revealing their relationship or by running off with another man during one of her business trips abroad. Carly has made it clear that she wants to begin seeing other men once she leaves Rossum Corporation because she has grown tired of waiting for Jack to make a commitment to her that she believes will never be realized.

    Case Question 2 (Continuation)

  • After hearing Jack describe why he planned to fire Carly, Robert decided to confront him about their relationship in order to determine if the rumors were true or false. As soon as Jack saw Robert approaching him, he immediately looked away because he knew Robert was coming over to ask him about Carly. He did not know what Robert would say to him if he asked him about Carly, but he assumed that it wouldn’t be something good because Robert was still angry about Jack refusing to give him more responsibility at Rossum Corporation despite Robert asking him several times over the past six months to do so. When Robert finally approached him, Jack became nervous because he knew that Robert was going to confront him about Carly’s relationship with him and he wasn’t sure how he should respond to Robert’s questions about Carly because he had not expected him to ever ask him anything about Carly again. Jack wanted Robert to know the truth about his relationship with Carly but he was afraid Robert would tell someone else what he tpd him if he confided in him about their relationship; therefore, Jack tried to stay calm when Robert asked him whether or not he was having an affair with Carly because he didn’t want Robert to notice how nervous he was because he knew Robert would never reveal anything negative about Rossum Corporation if he noticed that Jack was embarrassed or nervous in front of him; however, Jack didn’t realize that Robert had already heard rumors about his relationship with Carly and was determined to find out whether they were true or false when he confronted him about them. When Robert asked Jack whether or not Carly was really married and had children back home in England, Jack immediately denied those rumors and tpd Robert that they were absputely false because they had both agreed not to tell anyone about their relationship until after Carly left Rossum Corporation so no one would find out about it before she left; however, Jack knew she had already tpd her friends on Facebook about their relationship so they probably knew all about it already without them telling them directly; however, Jack still insisted that no one else at Rossum Corporation knew about their relationship besides himself and Carly so far because Carly was very careful about keeping her social media profiles private so nobody could see what she posted on them without her permission; however, Jack became nervous when Robert pressed him further about whether or not there were any other details about his relationship with Carly that might prove embarrassing if the public ever found out about them because that meant someone who worked at Rossum Corporation might have already tpd someone else at Rossum Corporation about their relationship without either of them knowing; however, Jack still insisted that neither of them had tpd anyone else at Rossum Corporation about their secret affair because they were both very confident no one else knew what was going on between them behind closed doors; however, when Robert asked Jack if Carly still lived in one of the apartments provided by Rossum Corporation even though she now had her own apartment in town where she lived with her three children who were supposedly visiting her every summer while she completed her MBA program at Stanford University through an online course program even though everyone who knew Carly knew she didn’t have any children who lived with her in California, Jack immediately lost his temper when Robert mentioned that everyone who knew Carly knew she didn’t have any children who visited her every summer while she attended Stanford University because during the spring semester of her MBA program she spent five weeks studying abroad in London where she met Jack by chance after one of her lectures when she dropped her class notes on the ground next to where he was seated; however, before Jack could tell Robert that
