Integration of Square and PagerDuty

Square

Square is a mobile payment company whose software is used by small businesses to accept payments from debit and credit cards. Started by Jack Dorsey, Square allows customers to use their smartphones, or point-of-sale devices, to pay for goods and services. Square provides a free card reader that attaches to a smartphone or tablet, allowing retailers to accept credit cards. The company also offers a Point of Sale (POS. system that includes a larger card reader and a receipt printer. In July 2011, Square announced its integration with Google Apps. In June 2012, Square introduced Square Register. In September 2012, Square launched the iPad version of the Square Register app. In October 2012, Square acquired Caviar, a food delivery service. In November 2014, Apple announced that Square would be one of the launch partners for Apple Pay. In September 2015, Square released a new chip card reader that is free to merchants that previously used a magstripe reader. In January 2016, Square launched a new feature called Ordering for its iOS app for restaurant delivery.

PagerDuty

PagerDuty is a computer software as a service (SaaS. provider of on-call management and incident response systems for IT teams. It works with popular on-premises and cloud-based applications such as those from SAP, Salesforce.com, Atlassian, GoToMeeting and Microsoft Office 365. Founded in 2010 and headquartered in San Francisco, California, PagerDuty’s product offerings include. PagerDuty itself; OpsGenie, an incident notification and escalation system; and the EXO platform for DevOps automation and orchestration.

Integration of Square and PagerDuty

Square uses PagerDuty to alert its engineers about incidents such as infrastructure problems or code deployments of its mobile payment processing software. When something goes wrong with the systems handling money transfers for thousands of businesses across the United States, Square wants to know about it right away. So when something does go wrong, Square employees get alerts on their mobile phones and can dispatch engineers to fix it as soon as possible. “We provide our customers with peace of mind that we’re going to let them know when there’s an issue,” said John Largent, director of operations at Square. The service was initially set up by McCLOUD, an Irish startup that has since been acquired by Salesforce.com. As part of the deal, Square inherited the service. Now it handles incidents at all hours of the day and night, 365 days a year. “When you run your business on the premise that you’re going to be connected 24/7—you literally can’t have down time—you have to build your business around that reality,” Largent said. “You need to make sure everything is covered, everything is monitored 100 percent of the time.” That means having enough engineers available to take care of any problem that arises—and hiring more engineers when they are needed. When an issue arises with one of Square’s products today—a bug in the code that causes problems, for example—an engineer gets alerted by email or text message within seconds. “The first thing they do is look at their device right away to see what the problem was so they can address it right away,” Largent said. The engineer then dispatches another engineer to take care of it if necessary—for example, if the problem is tied to some specific piece of hardware that needs to be replaced or serviced immediately. Otherwise, engineers will start working on it right away. “It keeps them engaged because they know they’re getting paid every single second they’re working on this thing,” Largent said.
