Integration of SproutVideo and Google Groups

  • Google Groups
    • When the user uploads a video to SproutVideo, it creates an email message that uses the title of the video as the subject and the video URL as the body of the email to [email protected]. It then attaches the video to the email message.
    • When the user sends the email, it will be sent to all member of the group with their current email address listed in the group’s “Edit group” section.
    • The user will also receive an email from Google Group stating that they have uploaded a new video to their group.
    • The user can then view the video online or download it to their computer by clicking on the link provided in the email message. A notification email will also be sent to all members of the group stating that a new video has been uploaded to the group.
    • Another email may also be sent to all members of the group stating that someone has commented on the video and what the comment was about.
    • Members of the group are then able to reply to this comment directly through their Google Mail accounts and are not required to visit the website again. They do not need to create a separate account specifically for this purpose.
    • A member may also want to submit a reply to a comment that has already been posted on YouTube or Vimeo so they do not have to leave Google Groups. This is possible because a reply form is incorporated into both sites that can be accessed through Google Groups.
    • Sending messages through [email protected] is free whereas sending mail through Google Mail is not free. Messages sent through [email protected] are also archived on Google Groups which does not happen if the only way you send messages is through your Gmail account.
    • The advantage of this integration between SproutVideo and Google Groups is that Google Groups assists users with sending emails from their Gmail accounts without having to use a separate account to send messages related to SproutVideo, which would take time and money away from other tasks that must be completed online (e.g., creating quizzes. It also saves time for users who want to simply reply to comments from their Gmail accounts rather than going back to SproutVideo and viewing the comments directly on YouTube or Vimeo or via a browser extension like Firefox add-on Video Download Helper, which you need to install on your computer before downloading videos from YouTube or Vimeo (Mozilla Add-Ons.
    • Users are able to post messages on YouTube or Vimeo through Google Groups without having to create and log into another account on those websites but instead use their Gmail account or Google Apps account that they already have set up with Google (Google Apps Help. This makes it easier for people who want to keep track of comments posted on YouTube or Vimeo but do not want to create an account specifically for this purpose (CNN Money.
    • The disadvantage of using Google Groups as opposed to creating an account directly with YouTube or Vimeo is that messages sent through Google Groups are archived on Google Groups which means users can no longer delete them if needed (Google Groups. On YouTube and Vimeo, users can delete comments if they do not like them or if they no longer want them to be available online (CNN Money.
