SMTP by Connect is a service that enables users to send emails through the mail servers of their choice. This means that you don’t have to go through an email provider like Gmail or Outlook but can use your own mail server instead. You can use SMTP by Connect to send emails from your application, website or even using email templates.
SMTP by Connect also gives you the ability to integrate with other services like Netlify and Mailgun.
Netlify is a platform for building and deploying web projects for developers of all skill levels. With the Netlify CLI users can deploy a site in minutes and it gives developers the ability to build modern static websites with ease. With Netlify, users have the option to choose between multiple deployment providers such as AWS S3, GitHub, Bitbucket, GitLab and more. It supports extensions to add Symfony, Vue, React & Angular, Webpack and PostCSS support and with automatic HTTPS it makes it easier to deploy an SSL certificate upon deployment.
Integration with Netlify and SMTP by Connect allows you to create a new service called “SMTP by Connect” in your Netlify account that can be used to send emails from your Netlify account. This tutorial will guide you through setting up your first SMTP by Connect service on Netlify along with creating an email template that is sent to a user after they sign up for your newsletters. The entire procedure takes about 10 minutes to complete.
Click on ‘Add New Service’ on the left-hand side menu of your Netlify dashboard. Choose ‘Configured Email Provider’ from the dropdown menu. Click on ‘Create New Instance’ and fill out the form:
In the above image you will have to enter five different values for your SMTP by Connect instance.
Email Hosting Domain – Your domain where you want your email to be sent from. Also known as public_html in Nginx Config File Username – User name for SMTP Login Password – Password for SMTP Login Incoming Port – 587 Authentication Type – Plain Text 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Email Hosting Domain – Your domain where you want your email to be sent from . After entering these values click on ‘Create Service’. This will take a few moments while Netlify provisions your instance of SMTP by Connect.
If you do not want to use Netlify Function — which allows you to run NodeJS code without having to set up any accounts locally — you can set up your credentials in a text file that is hosted in your git repository with the help of a top called cfg-netlify-tomorrow-theme. For that we need to configure our project files as fplows:
Create a fpder called ‘config’ within your Github repository. In the config fpder, create a file called “local-config.cfg” and place the fplowing content within. cfg-netlify-tomorrow-theme local-config "https://api.tomorrowland.io" ] [ api "https://api.tomorrowland.io/api/v1/users/" ] [ username "[email protected]" ] [ password "password" ] [ smtp "smtp.tomorrowland.io" ] [ smtpuser "[email protected]" ] [ smtppassword "password" ] [ smtpsecure "true" ] [ smtpport "587" ] On line 8, change “smtp.tomorrowland.io” to the address that you created when setting up SMTP by Connect on Netlify earlier in this tutorial. On line 9, change “[email protected]” to the username of your SMTP by Connect instance on Netlify. Now make sure that you run your git push --all command so that the changes made in this step are pushed to Github and reflected in the CloudFormation template that we created earlier in this article. In our case we will have to run the fplowing Git command locally on our computer from within our project directory. git push --all 1 git push -- all Now whenever you activate a new environment, you will have access to this instance of SMTP by Connect from within your code editor and can easily send emails from there!
