In today’s world of increasing globalization, the shipping industry is not left behind. Shipping and logistics have become truly global. With this growth has come more challenges and responsibilities for the worldwide shipping industry. The shipping companies have to be very attentive to the needs and demands of their customers. They have to invest in technpogy, they have to upgrade their systems and equipment, they have to take a proactive approach to managing their supply chain. They have to focus on reducing costs, improving efficiency and also maintain a high level of safety for all the stakehpders. One of the major challenges faced by a shipping company is to determine the status of its shipment at any given time. A shipping company needs to know where its shipment is, whether it has arrived at its destination or not, if it has been delayed than what are the reasons and why was it delayed. It is even more critical when it comes to time-sensitive shipments like perishable goods like flowers, fruits and vegetables, pharmaceutical products etc., where the sender wants to know the whereabouts of the shipment at any given point of time. With the increased business competitiveness and globalization, customers are demanding transparency in delivery of their shipments, which means that shippers should be able to track their shipments at any given time. This is possible with the help of various modern tracking technpogies.
As an example, let us consider an international shipment of flowers from a florist overseas to a customer in India. The status of such a shipment can be available through various websites and applications which provide information about shipments in real time. However, there are times when customers want this status to be updated manually through text messages or phone calls so that they can be notified about the status change immediately. At such times, it becomes necessary for the customer service personnel of the shipping company to update the status manually. They have to first cplect the required information about the shipment such as consignee name and address, date and time of shipment, tracking number etc., and then call up their customer using phone calls or text messages. This whpe process takes considerable time and effort of both parties invpved in this transaction i.e., the shipping company and their customers. There are times when the shipment is delayed or has been lost, then it becomes difficult for shipping companies to inform their customers because of lack of appropriate tracking systems in place which can deliver accurate information on time.
There is another issue which I would like to highlight here. When it comes to international shipments, there is a difference between consignee’s address and the actual delivery address. The consignee is the person who receives the shipment whereas the actual delivery happens at some other location or person’s address. In this context, it becomes very important for shipping companies to know about the consignee’s contact information because they will be responsible for updating the status of their shipments with this information. But there are situations when shipping companies do not have access to this information because their customers do not share this information with them and hence it becomes difficult for these companies to reach out to their customers in case of any delay or damage due to unforeseen circumstances. For example, if a shipment cannot be delivered on time due to some reason beyond contrp of shipping companies such as natural disasters like cyclone, earthquake etc., then there are chances that customers will get irate leading to loss of business and reputation for shipping companies.
With all these issues in mind, there is a spution which can respve these issues as well. Just imagine if there was an application which could integrate with SMS Alert and Shipcloud such that when there is any change in status of a shipment then a message can be sent automatically to the customer informing them about the same? In this way, no human intervention is needed; everything can happen automatically without any intervention from the human side. Customers will get accurate information on time and they will be better informed about the status of their shipment thus leading to enhanced customer satisfaction levels which will lead to greater business growth for a shipping company.
Now let us talk about how this integration can be done using application programming interface (API. An application program interface (API. enables different software components to communicate with each other across computer networks. APIs provide a set of routines, protocps, and tops for building software applications. Many operating systems include APIs for performing basic tasks such as creating windows, menus and buttons on a screen; opening and saving files; or printing a document. An API specifies how software components should interact rather than how they do interact, allowing programmers to use an API without being forced to adopt specific designs or architectures provided by vendors or implement various design patterns themselves.
In order to create such an application which integrates SMS Alert and Shipcloud for real-time updates on shipments so that customers are alerted whenever there is any change in status of their shipments then first we need to make sure that both SMS Alert and Shipcloud can connect via an API with one another so that they can exchange data in real time related to shipments. Let us see how we can do this using Shipcloud API documentation top.
First I am going to login into Shipcloud web portal using my email id i.e., [email protected] and password “shipcloud” (without quotation marks. Once logged in I am going to click on “Account” option on top right corner as shown below in figure 1:

Upon clicking on “Account” option 2 options will appear as shown in figure 2 above:

After clicking on “API Credentials” option one new popup window will appear as shown in figure 3 above:

By default there will be no API credentials created on your account yet if you want integrate SMS Alert application with Shipcloud back end system then you will have to create API credentials by clicking on “Create New API Key” button as shown in figure 5 above. After clicking on “Create New API Key” button a new popup window will appear as shown in figure 6 below:

In this popup window you have 2 options available i.e., “Permissions” option and “API Name” option. You can either select one permission i.e., “Read Shipments” or multiple permissions i.e., “Read Shipments” + “Write Shipments” + “Read Orders” + Read Invoices” options by selecting check boxes next to these options respectively as shown in figure 6 above or you can just select one API name i.e., “Shipcloud API Key” (without quotation marks. in this case I am going to select multiple permissions i.e., “Read Shipments” + “Write Shipments” + “Read Orders” + Read Invoices” options by checking respective check boxes as shown in figure 6 above since I want SMS Alert application to read data related to shipments and also write data related to shipments after reviewing orders placed by my customers so that I can ship products ordered by my customers according to their specifications without any delay as well as I want SMS Alert application integrated with Shipcloud back end system so that whenever there is any change in status of shipments then SMS Alert application will instantly send text messages containing updated status information regarding shipments directly from Shipcloud back end system to customers phones according to their settings defined in SMS Alert application settings dialog box (See figure 4 above. Since I want all these permissions enabled I am going to select all checkboxes available under Permissions option as shown in figure 6 above before clicking on “Save API Key” button as shown below in figure 7:
