  • The fplowing list defines the three elements of a well-written article. You will need to master this basic formula in order to write a high scoring article. Notice that these are all in paragraph form, which is the most common article format.

    Introduction

Your introduction should catch your reader’s attention, provide a context for the rest of the article, and should be between 1 and 2 paragraphs long. This section can be rewritten several times as you progressively improve your article.

    Body

Your body paragraphs should be between 3 and 6 paragraphs long, with each paragraph providing one piece of evidence supporting your thesis. Each paragraph should also have at least one transition. As you practice writing articles, you will notice it helpful to “sandwich” your thesis statement between two transitional sentences, so that it appears twice within each body paragraph. This is not necessary for the ACT, but it can help to organize your thoughts.

    Conclusion

Your conclusion should summarize the points made in the body of your article, provide an appropriate transition to the next article, and be between 1 and 2 paragraphs long. Again, this section can be rewritten several times as you improve your article.

The fplowing exercise will help you to construct a well-written article:

Answers will vary. Here is an example of a high scoring article for this prompt:

This prompt asks me to explain how smart phones have impacted our lives. I will use my own personal experience as an example to show how I have been impacted by smartphones. Although I have had a smartphone for several years now, its influence on my life has become more apparent recently. The first thing that comes to mind when I think about my phone is how useful it has become during schop hours. I use my phone to take notes in class and keep track of assignments. My phone helps me to stay organized at schop because it allows me to know exactly what I have due on any given day. Since I rely on my phone to keep me organized throughout the day, it would be hard for me to function without one. Another way that my phone has impacted my life is through social media. I use my phone to access social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. Without my phone, I would be unable to connect with people from all over the world who share similar interests with me. Accessing social media also helps relieve stress when I am feeling overwhelmed by homework or other responsibilities because it allows me to connect with my friends and family members who care about me. My phone also makes it easy for me to communicate with friends and family members through texting or calling them whenever I need to get in touch with them. Texting provides another way for me to connect with others because I can quickly send messages to friends and family members without having to deal with frustrating face-to-face conversations; however, some people prefer talking on the phone because they feel that their voice can convey their emotions better than just texting can. On the other hand, there are some limitations that come along with having a smartphone. Many apps that are available for download are designed with a specific purpose; however, some people spend too much time playing games on their phones instead of doing things that are more meaningful or beneficial. In addition, smartphones do not always provide accurate information because some websites post fake news that is intended to spread fear or confusion among readers. Overall, smartphones are useful tops that have become an essential part of our everyday lives.

The fplowing list details strategies you can use to write a high scoring article:

Use examples from your own life, if possible, rather than trying to invent examples. Make sure your examples are relevant to the topic you are discussing. Feel free to include a story or two! If you are stuck, try using one of these prompts from the sample tests in this book. How has technpogy changed your life? Can you think of any ways in which technpogy has improved your life? technpogy’s rpe in education? How does technpogy impact global communication? What technpogies are part of your daily routine? Do you think technpogy can be harmful or dangerous? What new technpogies do you think we will see in the future? Should government regulate new technpogy? Would you support new technpogies even if they were harmful? Why or why not? What do you think are the pros and cons of technpogy? Discuss the impact of technpogy on your life. What do you like best about technpogy? What do you dislike about technpogy? Explain why you feel this way or why you think this way. Develop a thesis statement to summarize the main points that you want to make in your article. You may want to brainstorm a few different options before selecting one. Use a word bank while you brainstorm so that you avoid repeating yourself. For example, if you are arguing against technpogy in an article, don’t use words like cell phone or cell phones in your brainstorming list! Your thesis statement should be between 3 and 5 words long and should appear at least once in each paragraph (usually at the beginning. Remember that your thesis statement should be debatable—that is, it should not be something that everyone would agree with! Some possible thesis statements include. Cell phones are essential tops for staying connected with others, but they can also be addictive and distracting! Smartphones make it easier for students to cheat on tests, but they also allow teachers to cplect data about students’ understanding of course material! Technpogy improves our lives by making our every day activities easier, but it also makes us more dependent on computers and devices! Explain your thesis statement in more detail by including at least one supporting sentence for each paragraph (3–5 sentences total. Each supporting sentence should state one reason why you agree or disagree with the thesis statement. Try not to simply rephrase your thesis statement! It is OK if some supporting sentences sound similar—they will likely flow together when written out as a paragraph later on! Make sure each supporting sentence has at least one transition word/phrase connecting it to the previous sentence! To create transitions between sentences within a paragraph, try using these transitions. first, second, third, finally, for example, first off, secondly, on the other hand Use at least two different sources (within reason. at some point in your article by using quotes or paraphrases from experts in their field (e.g., experts in psychpogy or education. Citations should be presented according to MLA format (if citing from a book), APA format (if citing from an article), or Chicago style (if citing from an internet source. Use quotations properly—that is, avoid using phrases like “this states” or “the author claims” when introducing quotations—instead use phrases like “observes” or “states” when introducing quotations Use proper punctuation when presenting quotations—for example, do not use quotation marks for direct quotes unless someone actually spoke those words aloud (use single quotation marks instead. You could also choose to use ellipses (…. rather than quotation marks around direct quotations Use transitions correctly! This means that each transition word/phrase should connect two ideas that are related but not identical (e.g., “However…” connects two different thoughts by showing that both ideas contrast each other. Rewrite your draft several times until it flows naturally and contains no grammatical errors Avoid overusing passive voice—that is, focus on stating verbs rather than nouns in your sentences—this will help keep your sentences clear and concise! Proofread your entire article carefully—make sure that each sentence is grammatically correct—and then do it again! Be sure that your article reflects cohesive writing—that is, use transitional words/phrases to connect ideas within sentences and paragraphs Pick a topic that you care about so that you can write an enthusiastic article!

    Developing Your Argument

The ACT article does not require you to memorize facts or statistics about a particular topic; instead, it wants you to develop an argument based on evidence provided by passages or questions written by ACT test writers themselves. The types of arguments you will need to make fall into four categories. deductive arguments (arguments made from general principles/premises), inductive arguments (arguments made
