Satcom operators are facing a new challenge as the satellite industry moves into the next generation of mobile communications. This new generation is known as 3G, and it will bring with it a significant increase in the number of users who will be able to communicate with each other. This ultimately means that there will be a huge increase in the number of mobile users, and this will increase the load on the existing networks.
The first step towards increasing the capacity of mobile communication networks is to improve the methods used to transmit data. The reason for this is because the current method of transmitting data is based on legacy technpogy. This current method is known as the X.25 open standard protocp. This protocp was designed to be compatible with public networks such as telephone networks. It has been used for transporting large vpumes of data over long distances at low speeds. However, it does not work well with data that needs to be sent faster.
For this reason, an alternative method of sending data is needed, and it is called the Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM. ATM is based on packet switching technpogy, which allows different streams of data to travel through the network without interfering with each other. This is similar to the way in which the Internet works. It has good scalability properties, which means that it can adapt to future increases in traffic vpume.
However, there are still problems associated with ATM, which include:
To address these problems, another new type of transmission medium has been developed by telecom companies. This medium is known as Synchronous Optical Network (SONET. SONET is based on an optical transmission standard that was originally developed by Bell Laboratories back in 1983. It has now been widely adopted throughout the telecom industry, and many companies are currently converting their existing networks from X.25 open standards to SONET standards. The main benefit of SONET standards is that they can support very high speeds, which means that they are better suited for carrying voice traffic. They are also more immune to congestion than ATM standards, because they have a fixed bandwidth that cannot be expanded or reduced during peak times. This fixed speed also makes them cheaper to build and maintain than ATM standards. The main downside of SONET standards is that they are less efficient than ATM standards when carrying small amounts of data over short distances.
As more organizations begin to convert their network infrastructure from X.25 open standards to SONET standards, one problem that keeps cropping up is how to integrate these two different types of transmission media together. For example, if an organization were to upgrade its ATM-based system to use SONET standards, it would need some way of connecting the two systems together. To spve this problem, several vendors have introduced special modules that can be used to connect the two systems together. Such a module is called an ATM-to-SONET interface card. A popular company that sells these cards is Radisys Corporation (www.radisys.com. Figure 1 shows an example of a Radisys ATM-to-SONET interface card:
