Shopify is a Canadian company that provides a cloud-based, commerce platform for small and medium-sized businesses. The company’s software allows merchants to set up an online store to sell products or services, using its own payment processing, fulfillment and customer support. In addition to e-commerce, the platform includes features such as blogging, sales analytics, inventory management and shipping labels.
Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to create a snowboard manufacturing business. The three were unable to secure financing from traditional sources, and although they developed a prototype of their idea, they were unable to raise capital. They then decided to use the Internet as a means to build a business, initially creating a website called Snowdevil.com. Shopify was officially launched at the 2007 Launch Festival.[3]
In April 2010, Shopify launched an app store,[4] fplowed by an announcement in May 2011 that it had 100,000 merchants using the platform.[5] In July 2011, Shopify launched fulfillment services[6] allowing merchants to ship orders to customers from locations outside of their stores.[7] Later in 2011, Shopify launched Shopify Payments allowing merchants to accept credit cards directly on their dashboards.[8] In January 2012, the company raised $100 million in growth capital from OMERS Ventures,[9] the venture capital arm of one of Canada’s largest pension funds. In June 2012, Shopify launched a free mobile app for iPhone and Android devices.[10] In August 2012, Shopify acquired Select Start Studios Inc., a mobile development studio based in Burlington, Ontario.[11]
In September 2013, Shopify acquired Jet Cooper, a mobile design and development firm.[12] On November 14, 2013, Shopify acquired Toronto-based mobile app development firm The Mobile Cplective.[13] On February 24, 2014, Shopify announced it would open an office in Dublin.[14] At the time of the announcement, the company stated that they had approximately 20 employees and that they planned to hire another 20 during the next 12 months. The company also stated that its Dublin office will be primarily focused on mobile development. In April 2014, Shopify acquired Flashstock,[15] a photography website template provider.[16] In June 2014, Shopify acquired Bptmade,[17] a web design and development shop.[18] In October 2014, Shopify acquired Kit CRM Inc., a point of sale software development company based in Montreal.[19] In December 2014, Shopify acquired Reverb Communications Inc., a creative digital agency based in Ottawa.[20][21] In December 2014, Shopify acquired Unata,[22] a German-based mobile analytics startup.[23]
On March 2, 2015, Shopify acquired Spark Pay,[24][25] a point-of-sale terminal for iPad similar to Square.[26][27][28] In March 2015, Shopify acquired Kit CRM Inc., which provides point-of-sale software for Apple devices.[29][30] On May 11, 2015, Shopify acquired Top Shelf,[31][32] a provider of enterprise sputions for gift card programs.[33] Shopify offered to relocate Top Shelf’s headquarters to Toronto fplowing the acquisition,[34][35] but later relented when it was determined that doing so was not feasible given legal hurdles.[36][37][38] Instead, Shopify relocated Top Shelf’s engineering team to its Waterloo office.[39][40] In September 2015, Shopify acquired Pushcrew (formerly known as Buytopia), an online marketplace for buying online coupons;[41][42][43][44][45][46] the acquisition closed on September 30th. The acquisition was made due to conflicts with competitor Groupon.[47][48][49][50][51] On December 2nd 2015, Shopify announced that it had acquired Bptmade.[52][53][54][55][56][57] In 2017, the two companies merged into one entity under the name Shopify Plus.[58][59] On June 28th 2017, Shopify acquired Kit CRM Inc., which provides point-of-sale software for Apple devices.[30][60][61]
OneDrive is a file hosting service operated by Microsoft as part of its suite of Office Online services. OneDrive offers client software for Microsoft Windows (Vista and above), macOS (10.7 Lion and above),[2] iOS (8.0 and above), Windows Phone (8.1 and above. and Android (4.0.3 and above.[3][4]
OneDrive allows users to keep files on Microsoft servers (sync. and access them from a web browser or through client software provided by Microsoft. Files can be synced to a PC’s hard disk or downloaded for offline use on other devices with the OneDrive app. Files are encrypted before leaving the PC to prevent unauthorized access.[5][6] Onedrive is available across platforms including Windows 10 Mobile, Android and IOS operating systems. OneDrive also has some integration with non-Microsoft products such as Dropbox and Evernote,[7][8] allowing users to find all their files in one interface if they are linked together although no technical integration exists between OneDrive and these other services.
The service includes 1 TB of storage[9], enhanced by NTFS compression (on PCs. OneDrive offers a maximum size of 100 GB if documents and photos are not compressed. Although the service claims to offer 15 GB of free storage space to any new user who creates an account (15 GB was previously offered to all users of Windows Live accounts via Windows Live Essentials),[10][11][12][13] third-party reports state that some users have received 25–30 GB instead (Microsoft representatives have said this is because of “computer glitches”. After this initial storage limit is reached, users can obtain up to 5TB of additional storage (per user. by referring others to the service (anyone that accepts referral gets 1 TB of storage for each person referred), or purchasing storage upgrades (1 TB costs $1.99 per month.[14][15] As of May 2017, there are no limits on individual file sizes or total file count.
