    Chapter 4

    There are no Dumb Questions

“The superior man is distressed by the limitations of his ability; he is not distressed by the fact that men do not recognize the ability that he has.”

    — Confucius

No matter how good you are at writing, there are always things you can learn from other writers. This chapter will help you find value in the work of others. It will also help you see your own writing with fresh eyes and find ways to improve it. The part of your brain that writes fiction is a muscle. It needs exercise. This chapter will give you exercises that will help you improve your ability to write, and it will show you how to gain insights from the work of other writers.

    Seek Inspiration, Not Perfection

This chapter will be most useful if you read fiction and nonfiction material and ask yourself why something works and what you can learn from it. Don’t worry about trying to copy someone else’s style. You won’t be able to pull that off anyway, and even if you could, you wouldn’t want to. What you can learn from reading other people’s work is how they spve problems. If you like a certain style, use it as an inspiration for your own style or use it as a template for a particular technique or device.

    Read Widely

You should read fiction written for adults and fiction written for children and young adults (YA. Read fiction in genres you like and read fiction in genres you don’t like. If you like mystery, read crime stories, horror stories, science fiction stories, fantasy stories, romance stories, dystopian stories, stories about detectives, stories about serial killers, etc. If you don’t like fantasy, read fantasy anyway. If you think fantasy is just for children, ask yourself whether that means all children are too stupid to enjoy any story other than a fairy tale. Do your best to read widely and avoid being a snob about what kinds of books you enjoy.

    Read Critically

It’s tempting to skip over parts of a story that aren’t interesting or that don’t seem relevant to the story. Try to resist that urge. Try not to skim through parts of a story. Try to reread parts of a story again if you find yourself skimming over them. It’s easy to get into a rhythm when reading a story. If you find yourself skimming over a passage that contains something important, stop yourself and reread it.

When you read a story, try to imagine how it would be different if it were written differently. For instance, think about how a mystery story would be different if it were written in a first-person point of view instead of third person. Think about how a story would be different if it were written in stream-of-consciousness instead of chronpogical order or vice versa. Think about how a story would be different if it were written in verse instead of prose or vice versa. Think about how a story would be different if it were written in second-person point of view instead of third-person point of view or vice versa. Think about how a story would be different if it were written in present tense instead of past tense or vice versa.

Think about how a story would be different if it contained more description or fewer descriptions. Think about how a story would be different if it contained more dialogue or fewer dialogues. Think about how many characters are in the story and why there are so many or so few characters. Think about whether there are too many or too few minor characters compared to major characters. Think about whether there are too many or too few characters who serve too similar functions in the story. Think about whether there are too many or too few characters whose storylines intersect in interesting ways with other characters’ storylines or who interact in less interesting ways with other characters’ storylines, etc. When thinking about these questions, consider what purpose each character serves in the story and whether each character serves that purpose effectively in relation to other characters who serve similar purposes in the story.

Consider whether there are too many or too few incidents in the story related to each character’s storyline(s. Consider whether each incident serves its purpose effectively or whether each incident could have been more effective if it were expanded or if it had occurred earlier or later in the story. Also consider whether each incident could have been more effective if some other incident had occurred before it or after it, etc.

Consider whether there are too many or too few scenes in the story related to each character’s storyline(s. Consider whether each scene could have been more effective if it occurred earlier or later in the story or if some other scene had occurred before it or after it, etc.

Consider whether there are too many or too few minor events in each minor character’s storyline(s. Consider whether each minor event serves its purpose effectively or whether each minor event could have been more effective if some other minor event had occurred before it or after it, etc.

Consider whether there are too many or too few major events in each major character’s storyline(s. Consider whether each major event serves its purpose effectively or whether each major event could have been more effective if some other major event had occurred before it or after it, etc.

Consider whether there are too many or too few minor characters in the story related to each minor character’s storyline(s. Consider whether there might be one major character who could play the rpe of several minor characters and thereby serve those several rpes more effectively than those several minor characters combined serve those several rpes combined now. Consider whether there might be one major character who could play the rpe of several minor characters and thereby serve those several rpes more effectively than those several minor characters combined serve those several rpes combined now because that single major character might be able to serve those several rpes with better pacing during certain scenes than those several minor characters combined serve those several rpes during certain scenes now because those several minor characters combined might serve those several rpes with better pacing during certain scenes than that single major character serving those several rpes now during certain scenes because those several minor characters combined might serve those several rpes with better pacing during certain scenes than that single major character serving those several rpes now during certain scenes because that single major character might not have as much screen time as those several minor characters combined have now during certain scenes due to that single major character performing those several rpes being able to be shown onscreen at once whereas those several minor characters combined being able to be shown onscreen at once might not have as much screen time as that single major character performing those several rpes being able to be shown onscreen at once now due to what those several minor characters combined might say while onscreen versus what that single major character performing those several rpes being able to be shown onscreen at once might say while onscreen due to those several minor characters combined having smaller rpes than that single major character performing those several rpes being able to be shown onscreen at once now due to that single major character performing those several rpes being able to be shown onscreen at once now having enough screen time to develop certain relationships dynamics with other major characters which those several minor characters combined might not have enough screen time to
