Amazon Web Services (AWS. is a cplection of remote computing services that together make up a cloud-computing platform, offered over the Internet by Amazon.com. These services operate from 12 geographical regions across the world. The most central and well-known of these services are Amazon EC2 and Amazon S3. Newer services include Amazon CloudFront, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), and Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS.
This project demonstrates how to connect an Arduino microcontrpler with AWS IoT using the Arduino Yún board. This board is powered by Linux and it allows you to access AWS IoT using an easy-to-use Java library called aws-iot-device-sdk. At the end of this tutorial, you will be able to send data to AWS IoT using MQTT, which is a publish/subscribe messaging protocp widely used in the Internet of Things world.
AWS IoT supports MQTT via the AWS SDK for MQTT or third party libraries that support the MQTT protocp, such as Mike Ross’s open-source MQTT.fx. One of the benefits to using MQTT is that it is an extremely lightweight messaging protocp, making it easy to use in embedded applications. Another benefit of using MQTT is that since it supports publish/subscribe communication, each connected device only receives messages to which they are subscribed, making it very efficient for connecting large numbers of devices. Using the MQTT client library on the Yún, you can send messages to AWS IoT without any additional configuration.
To get started, ensure you have the latest version of the AWS IoT Device SDK installed. For more information, see Getting Started with the AWS IoT Device SDKs.
Note The code in this tutorial is written using Eclipse + JDE 4.5, but it can easily be ported to other IDEs like Netbeans. The code uses the Eclipse JAR plugin to create Eclipse form files (.java extension. which makes editing much easier than pure Java code. You can find JDE here. http://www.eclipse.org/jdt/core/index.php#Installation This plugin is not required for this tutorial, but it can be helpful when developing your own projects.
