How to Write an Academic Book Review. A book review is a special form of academic writing that provides a critical evaluation of a text. While many students struggle with writing a book review, it is a valuable exercise that can improve your reading comprehension, analytical thinking skills, and argumentative writing abilities. Not only will you learn how to critique the content and style of a book, you will also learn how to construct an effective argument supported by evidence in one well-organized paragraph. A book review typically includes the fplowing components. Introduction. Provide background information about the book in question. You can include the title, author, date it was written, length, genre, theme, etc. First Paragraph. Present an insightful thesis sentence that addresses your overall opinion about the book. Be sure to include any relevant information that will help the reader decide if he or she wants to read this book. For example, you might want to mention if you liked or disliked the book. Second Paragraph. Provide an objective summary of the text. This is where you take notes during the reading process to provide detailed summaries of each chapter. It is important to note whether or not you agree with the author’s interpretation of the literature; however, refrain from stating your own interpretation until after you have presented the author’s arguments. Third Paragraph. Evaluate the author’s arguments and evidence. You should present specific quotations that support your evaluation. Next, you should use critical analysis to explain why these arguments are either credible or not credible. Finally, explain what you learned from reading the book. Conclusion. Summarize your overall evaluation of the book along with any suggestions for improving it or additional readings you might recommend. Make sure to state clearly what you liked or did not like about the book so that other readers can decide if they want to read it based on your review. References. Include at least 2 academic sources that were used in preparing your review. Reference properly using APA format. See the Purdue OWL for more information.
