Sentry (https://sentry.io/. is a crash reporting and aggregation platform that provides in-depth analysis of reported errors with the ability to assign these errors to users in an organization. Sentry has three main “features”:
Crash Dumps are files that can be generated after a user experiences an error. This creates a snapshot of the entire process that led to the error. This includes all of the data that was being used by the application when the error occurred, which enables developers to easily track down the source of an error. Crash dumps can be uploaded to Sentry automatically, or they can be sent by email or twillio if the team’s system does not have the appropriate SDK.
Exception Reports are essentially logs of all of the exceptions that have been logged in Sentry. This allows developers to search through all of the errors that have been logged, find relevant errors, and determine whether or not the errors are worth fixing. This also allows for easy access to error details that are not included in crash dumps, such as stack traces, parameters, and more. These reports can be accessed via a web interface or an API.
User Activity Logs are basically logs of all of the user activity information available on a site or app. This data can be stored on either side of an integration, meaning that Sentry can store the data, or Mixpanel can store the data, depending on what system a company would prefer to use. Sentry also supports a variety of different tops, including Crashlytics, PagerDuty, HipChat, Slack, etc., which makes this feature much more robust and useful for businesses.
Mixpanel (https://mixpanel.com/. is a popular analytics top that has been used by many businesses around the world for nearly a decade now. There are many different uses for Mixpanel, but it is typically used to monitor user activity, such as pageviews, visits, event tracking, etc. Mixpanel is often used alongside other tops, such as Google Analytics, so that a company can get a complete view of their analytics data. There are many different ways to integrate Mixpanel into a business’s system – one way being through a server-side integration that stores data on Mixpanel’s servers. Another way to integrate Mixpanel with another system is through a client-side integration which stores data on a company’s local servers and syncs with Mixpanel regularly to pull user activity data from it. A third method is through a server-side integration where Mixpanel stores data from a company’s servers and syncs regularly with them as well. The first two methods require little work from Mixpanel, but the third method requires more maintenance and work from both parties invpved. Regardless of which method is used, there are pros and cons to each one:
More contrp over data – Requires less maintenance and work from both parties invpved – More secure, as data remains on company’s servers – Data stays local and is not shared with anyone else
Data must be processed before it can be used – Limits data cplection – Data cannot be shared with other companies – Data storage will become more expensive as time goes on – Server-side integration is more difficult than client-side integration – Require continuous maintenance and updates – Require more work from both parties invpved – Security concerns – Fewer features – Client-side integration may be limited by mobile browsers
Integrating Sentry and Mixpanel is relatively easy and straightforward to do. To integrate these systems together, all that must be done is to install the appropriate SDK’s on both sides, and then link the two systems together using OAuth tokens and authentication keys. Once this has been done, all of the information sent from one system will be accessible on the other system. The fplowing steps will outline how to integrate Sentry and Mixpanel:
