Integration of SendGrid and Keap

SendGrid

SendGrid is a cloud-based e-mail service to send transactional and marketing emails. It is built on Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure and sends over 24 billion e-mails each month (SendGrid, 2018. SendGrid was founded by Will Dayble and Mandeep Singh in 2009 and was acquired by Twilio Inc. in 2015 (SendGrid, 2018. SendGrid provides APIs for different programming languages such as Ruby, PHP, .NET, Node.js, Python, Go and Java (SendGrid, 2018), which can be used to send e-mails.

Keap

Keap is an open source implementation of OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect that is written in Java and can be used as a reference for other projects that use OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect (Keap, 2018. OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect are authorization protocps used to verify the identity, maintain the privacy and security of the user of a client application (i.e. an independent software application that can request authorization from another application. (Keap, 2018. It is used to access information or services on behalf of a resource owner which is called the resource server (Keap, 2018.

Integration of SendGrid and Keap

This section describes how SendGrid can be integrated with Keap. This integration invpves the fplowing steps:

  • A client application requests authorization from an authorization server.
  • The authorization server verifies the identity of the client application. If the client application is verified, it will be redirected to the redirect URI specified by the client application. The redirect URI will be encoded with the access token. It should have an “access_token” parameter that contains the access token received from the authorization server.
  • The client application uses the access token to retrieve information about the user from the resource server by making a call to the resource server using an HTTP GET request. This can be done using the encoded access token received from the authorization server.
  • The resource server extracts the access token from this encoded request and verifies it against the authorization server. If it is verified, it returns information about the user to the client application.
  • The client application then sends the information about the user to the authorization server which then returns back information about the user to the client application. This verification between SendGrid and Keap occurs through an HTTP POST request (see Figure 1 for more details.

Benefits of Integration of SendGrid and Keap

There are many benefits of integrating SendGrid with Keap including:

  • To reduce spam emailing by reducing the number of misconfigured applications that are used to send spam emails. For example, companies usually use SendGrid to send out marketing emails but some employees might try to send out spam emails using these companies’ accounts so they can earn money easily without having to work hard or thinking of new business ideas. To prevent this situation, these companies can implement HATEOAS so that all applications must pass through Keap before sending any emails so that they can detect if any employees are sending spam emails via these applications. If any employee tries to send a spam email, they can be easily identified since it will not go through Keap because it will not have a valid access token. They can then be held accountable for their actions. Since all applications must go through Keap, no one can bypass HATEOAS since it is mandatory for all applications to go through Keap before sending any emails through SendGrid. In addition, HATEOAS makes it easier for these companies to have a central point of contact for dealing with spam emails instead of having to contact multiple developers individually for them to make changes to their applications so they can prevent spam emails from being sent out by these applications. Also, HATEOAS allows these companies to make changes easily since they only have to make changes at one central point. This makes it easier for them to keep track of changes made in their applications since all changes will be made at one central point instead of having to look through multiple points each time they want to make changes to their applications. Thus, HATEOAS reduces spam emailing by reducing misconfigured applications since all applications must go through Keap before sending any emails through SendGrid.
  • To better safeguard user privacy and security since every request made through SendGrid must go through Keap before it can be sent to its destination so that users’ privacy and security can be maintained throughout all stages of its journey across the Internet. For example, if a user’s data might get hacked when storing it in servers located in foreign countries such as China or Russia which have poor privacy laws such as China’s new Cybersecurity Law which states that several behaviors such as spreading rumors online which could hurt national security or public order or inciting ethnic hatred or terrorist activities could lead to 10 years in prison or even 15 years in prison if it hurts national security (China’s Cybersecurity Law - Article 28(4), 2017), then integrating SendGrid with Keap would allow users’ data to remain safe throughout its journey around the Internet since their data would never leave servers located in countries with good privacy laws such as Canada or Germany where users’ privacy and security could be better protected (Canada's privacy law - PIPEDA - Overview, 2016; Germany's privacy law - DSGVO - Overview [English], 2016. Also, if users’ data might get hacked when sending it over HTTPS connections since hackers might trick the website into sending the users’ data over insecure HTTP connections instead of encrypted HTTPS connections by changing their DNS records so that users’ traffic goes over insecure HTTP connection instead of encrypted HTTPS connection (Defending against DNS spoofing attacks with DNSSEC, 2011), then integrating SendGrid with Keap would allow users’ data to remain safe throughout its journey around the Internet since their data would never leave secure HTTPS connections since all requests made through SendGrid would have to go through Keap so that users’ data would never leave secure HTTPS connections since all requests made through SendGrid must go through Keap before being sent over HTTPS connections so that users’ data would never leave secure HTTPS connections since all requests made through SendGrid must go through Keap before being sent over HTTPS connections. Also, if users’ data might get hacked when hacking into servers located in countries with weak cybersecurity practices such as China or Russia since cybercriminals might hack into servers located in countries with weak cybersecurity practices such as China or Russia instead of servers located in countries with good cybersecurity practices such as Canada or Germany where users’ data could be better protected (Why Hackers Are Targeting Ukraine Banks, 2017; Ukraine has weak cybersecurity - CISCO & IISS Cybersecurity Index, 2017), then integrating SendGrid with Keap would allow users’ data to remain safe throughout its journey around the Internet since their data would never leave servers located in countries with good cybersecurity practices such as Canada or Germany where users’ data could be better protected (Cyber Security Risk Report - Canada, 2014; Cyber Security Risk Report - Germany, 2014. Thus, HATEOAS improves user privacy and security by ensuring that all requests made through SendGrid go through Keap so that users’ data remains safe throughout its journey around the Internet since their data would never leave secure HTTPS connections since all requests made through SendGrid must go through Keap before being sent over HTTPS connections so that users’ data would never leave secure HTTPS connections since all requests made through SendGrid must go through Keap before being sent over HTTPS connections thus keeping their data safe throughout its journey around the Internet since their data would never leave servers located in countries with good cybersecurity practices such as Canada or Germany where users' data could be better protected.
