The service also allows users to open files directly inside a web browser or via an external app. Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides allow multiple users to edit documents, spreadsheets, and presentations simultaneously.[7] Chat functionality is also built-in.[8][9][10] Google Docs originated as a feature of Google Labs on April 22, 2006,[11] and was upgraded to general availability on November 13, 2006.[12] On March 28, 2012, Google announced that the ability to edit documents offline would be terminated in January 2013,[13][14] due to the cost of licensing the Microsoft Office Suite that was required for this function.[15] Offline editing was officially shut down on January 31, 2013.[16] On March 14, 2014, Google announced that it would be making Google Docs available offline by default in an upcoming release.[17][18] In December 2014, Google announced that offline editing was fully enabled for Chromebook users.[19][20][21] In June 2016, Google announced that it would discontinue the Docs app for both Android and iOS in favor of a new "G Suite mobile app for work" that would serve as the successor of the Google Drive app.[22][23][24][25]
