Integration of Firebase Realtime Database and Spotify

  • Before Introducing the Topic
  • On May 8, 2018, Spotify and Firebase announced to integrate Firebase Realtime Database and Spotify. This integration is very useful for developers. It can let users view data in real time from Firebase Realtime Database. They can also create a new playlist by listening to a song in a playlist.

The reason I choose this topic is that I find it very useful. I think that people can use Firebase Realtime Database and Spotify together to develop their apps. That’s why I want to write an article about Firebase Realtime Database and Spotify.

    Firebase Realtime Database?

Firebase Realtime Database is a cloud database that provides a set of applications for storing data in real time. Different from other database management systems, Firebase Realtime Database supports web, Android, iOS, and web browsers.

Firebase Realtime Database uses Google Cloud Platform (GCP. to store data. So you do not need to pay extra cost for storage. You can get more information about Firebase Realtime Database on its official website. https://firebase.google.com/docs/database/realtime-database/.

    Spotify?

Spotify is an online music streaming service. Spotify provides a lot of music materials for users. Users can download or listen to music with Spotify app with a subscription fee.

In this article, I will talk about the integration of Firebase Realtime Database and Spotify. Firebase Realtime Database helps Spotify to save and view data in real time. This integration makes users feel more comfortable when using Spotify.

Integration of Firebase Realtime Database and Spotify

Integration of Firebase Realtime Database and Spotify is supported by the fplowing features:

Users can view the contents of a playlist in real time. The order of songs in the playlist will be changed automatically according to the user’s listening history of each song. Users can add new songs to playlists and add comments to playlists in real time. When a user listens to a song, they will be able to see related songs directly on the same page. Users can create a new playlist by clicking on the “Playlist” button on the right side of the song page or clicking on the song title. If users created a new playlist, they will have access to it at any time later.

Benefits of Integration of Firebase Realtime Database and Spotify

Integration of Firebase Realtime Database and Spotify can bring many benefits to users:

Users don’t have to remember all the albums, artists, and songs they like because Firebase Realtime Database saves all their favorites in real time. After creating a playlist, users will be able to add songs they like to it in real time as well as view the playlist in real time as well. It makes users feel comfortable when using Spotify because there are always new songs and playlists on them. For example, if users add a song or an album to their playlist, they will be able to listen to that song or album immediately after adding it. They will not have to go back to the main page of Spotify or click “Reload” anymore. It can save users’ time so that they can listen to more music. If users want to listen to a song again, they can do so directly by clicking on it on the same page because Firebase Realtime Database also saves listeners’ listening histories in real time as well as introduces related songs on the same page when a user listens to one song already. For example, when a user listens to a song called “Summer Days” by Little Mix, Firebase Realtime Database will show some related songs such as “Woman Like Me” by Little Mix and “No More Sad Songs” by Little Mix too on the same page. When users listen to a song, they will be able to find out related songs and create new playlists easily. Since all the data is saved in real time, no matter where users use their accounts, they will have access to the data at any time later. For example, if users create a new playlist called “My Favorite Songs” on their computer, they will be able to find that playlist when they use their account on another device such as an iPhone or iPad too later on. They just need to go to their playlists list and click on “My Favorite Songs”. So it makes users feel more comfortable when using Spotify because they don’t need to remember what they like anymore or worry about losing relevant data anymore either. Usually, when users want to create a new playlist, they need to go back to main page firstly and click “Playlist” on the top left corner of the page then click on “Create New Playlist” nearby. After that, they need to name the playlist and type the playlist title then click “Create Playlist” again afterwards. With integration of Firebase Realtime Database and Spotify, users will not need to do all these steps anymore because they can create a new playlist by clicking on the “Playlist” button on the right side of any song page or clicking on the song title itself or clicking on the “+ Add To Playlist” button nearby too. So users will save time and energy when creating new playlists now.
